Viva McGary McComb of Conroe, thought to be the oldest woman in Texas, died at the age of 110 Thursday morning in Houston.

A direct descendant of two of Texas' pioneering families, McComb passed away on the eve of the state convention of the Pan American Round Tables, an organization to which she was devoted. Born March 29, 1894 in Houston, McComb founded the Conroe Pan American Round Table in 1949 after having spent considerable time in Central America."The Pan American Round Table was one of her great loves," said Jeanette Defee, one of five Conroe Table representatives headed for the state convention in El Paso that begins today. "She was a brilliant woman, who was well-read and enjoyed traveling."The Pan American Round Table is an organization that promotes friendship, knowledge and tolerance between countries in the Western Hemisphere. McComb served as its state director in 1957.Although unable to attend in recent years, McComb has been recognized at each of the state conventions, Defee said. Ironically, the Conroe Table planned to recognize McComb as the oldest living Texan at this weekend's meeting, and show the video of her 110th birthday, Defee said. The Conroe Table has a current membership of 39."Every year after Christmas she would send everybody in the organization either an educational letter or a poem," Defee said. "Everyone thought so much of her."For a time, McComb served on the local committee of the Texas Historical Foundation; a fitting appointment since she was, quite literally, a historical treasure.McComb lived through 20 presidents and outlived all of her children. She was nine years old by the time the Wright brothers successfully flew the first powered airplane. She was married to prominent lawyer and engineer William Perry McComb. One of Viva McComb's grandfathers, Isaac McGary, fought in the Battle of San Jacinto and was the first county clerk for Montgomery County. Her maternal grandfather, Dr. Pleasant Williams Kittrell, was a member of the Texas Legislature and enacted a bill that established the University of Texas.Viva McComb was a founding member of the Longmire Road Church of Christ in Conroe."She's been justly appreciated and loved by the community," said preacher Joe Goodspeed. "She has been a faithful and generous member of the church through the years."Goodspeed noted that, as McComb lived beyond the century mark, she appreciated and enjoyed the attention spawned by her long life."She handled it with perfect aplomb," he said. "She was the same person she'd always been, but she did enjoy the attention."McComb's daughter-in-law, Dorothy McComb of Conroe, said her son Austin McComb is a state employee who conducted research into Viva McComb's status as the oldest living woman in Texas."She was some mother-in-law," laughed Dorothy McComb. "It took a village to keep up with her. She was a vivacious woman. She had a lot of enthusiasm for life."Services for Viva McComb are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel, located on West Texas 105 just outside Loop 336. Goodspeed will preside over the services. Visitation will be held at 3:30 p.m. until service time.Howard Roden can be reached at (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX)
