Ainsley Colvin was the youngest of the thirteen children of Andrewand Jemima Colvin. He was born in Chester District, SC. June 22, 1829. Hemarried Mary A. Crosby, borne in SC. February 20, 1835, daughter ofWilliam and Mattie Crosby. They remained in AC from the time they marrieduntil the fall of 1853 when they moved to LA.
He bought a farm between Cypress Creek and Bayou D'Arbone and was asuccessful farmer for many years. His wife died May 27,1893. The fatherremained on the farm with his youngest children, Milton, Charlie andAlma. After several years, he married Mrs. Pauline Price, a sister of hisfirst wife. She did not live may years and after her death, he broke uphousekeeping and lived around with his children.
Like many Colvins, Ainsley was a great hunter and loved the sport aslong as there was any game in the country. He was afflicted early inlife with heart trouble which incapacitated him for work on the farm andled him to read a great deal. He had a naturally brilliant mind andphenomenal memory, and was regarded as the best reader of the Colvinbrothers. He collected a good library which unfortunately was destroyedwhen the old house burned. Like his mother, he devoted a great deal oftime to the study of the scriptures, which he enjoyed expounding toothers.
He and his wife were charter members of the Missionary BaptistChurch, Mineral Springs, which was organized in Aug 1865, and he remaineda devoted Christian worker as long as he lived. For forty-four years, whenever failed to attend the Baptist Association.
He was active in promoting the cause of temperance and prohibitionthrough out his life. He was interested in history and never forgot aname or date. He loved to relate the traditions and history of the Colvinfamily, much of which in his later years he recorded in an old ledger. Itis largely due to this record that the Colvin Family can now trace itshistory back two centuries to the coming of John Colvin and Hannah Priceto Virginia.
Ainsley H. Colvin died at Winfield, La. December 7,1909. He wasburied at Unionville, La. His last words were "In my father's house thereare many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you."
