OBITUARY, from "The Chester News," 14 November 1934:
Hon. Saml. T. McKeown died yesterday p. m.
Hon Samuel Thompson McKeown, one of the last of Chester county's few remaining Confederate veterans, died yesterday afternoon at his home near Cornwell, following a gradual decline in health over a long period.
Mr. McKeown was a native of the Cornwell neighborhood, and was born August 7, 1846, the son of samuel and Jennie Thompson McKeown.
Funeral services were conducted at the home this morning by Revs. W. A. Kennedy, S. A. Ewart, and A. M. MacLaughlin. Interment was in the family cemetery on the plantation. A large concourse of friends and neighbors were present to pay their tribute of respect to this good man.
Mr. McKeown was active in politics for a number of years, and was a member of the House of Representatives all told for six terms. He also served for two terms as a member of the Board of Trustees of Clemson College.
In the War between the States Mr. McKeown was a member of the First Regiment, South Carlina Volunteers. Following the war he took an active part in the redemption of the State from radical domination. Mr. McKeown was intensely interested in improving the farmers condition, and took an active part in the Alliance and similar organizations. He was a man who enjoyed the love and unbounded confidence and esteem of his fellow-citizens, and his long life was a benediction to his community. Mr. McKeown is survived by three nieces as follows: Mrs. May McFadden, of Clinton, and Mrs. Young Kennedy and Miss Fannie Boyd, both of Cornwwell. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Moffatt McKeown, Graniteville; Mrs. M. J. Munley, of new Jersey; James McKeown, Miller McKeown and Elizabeth McKeown, all of Cornwell.
[note from Jim Webb: I think that grandchild Mrs. M. J. Munley should be Mrs. William Munley; Katherine Wylie McKeown and William Munley had a daughter named Mary Jane Munley.]
