Copied from a sketch of "Dr.Archibald Ingram Barron" written by Dr.
Robert Lathan and published in the Yorkville Enquirer, August 24, 1887,
condensed by W.A. Pressley, Rock Hill, South Carolina, December 1925.
"The Barron family is of pure Scottish descent. The line through which
Dr. A.I. Barron descended is traced back to James Barone who was one of
the lay commissioners who with John Knox attended the firstGeneral
Assembly of the Church of Scotland which met in Edinburgh on the 20thday
of December 1560. John Knox and commissioners James Barone {the name in
Scotland is spelled Barrone and Barone} and Edward Houp were the
representatives of the Presbyterian congregation in Edinburgh."
"The original Barrone or Barron settlement in Ireland was at
Carrickfergus, in County Antrim."
SMALL POX REALLY CHICKEN POX
"A stranger arrived in our town on Monday last on whose body and face
were evidence of some contagious disease. A report soon obtained currency
that he was afflicted with the small pox, and the matter soonbrought to
the attention of the Town Council, he was sent five or six miles into the
country and placed under the care of a proper nurse. On yesterday, the
Town Council dispatched three of our practicing physicians for the
purpose of examining the case and submitting a reliable report. We
herewith submitthe state of the physicians:
"To the Indendent and Wardens of Yorkville:
"Gentlemen: We, the undersigned practicing Physicians in this place,
having examined by your request, the case of a Mr. Edwards, who came into
our town on Monday last; and from the fact of his being a stranger,
complaining of being unwell, and having some eruption on his face and
body, caused suspicion that he might be subject to Small Pox, and who was
immediately removed by your authority to a house in the country for care
and attention, do hereby unhesitatedly pronounce the case of Mr. Edwards
to be of virulent Varicella, or ChickenPox; and can assure the Public,
that they need have no fear of taking Small Pox from his case.
Signed: A. I. Barron; J. R. Bratton; H. G. Jackson."

OFFICERS OF YORKVILLE'S HOME GUARDS
As soon as Fort Sumter was fired upon, April 12, 1861, York District was
astir with men determined to enlist their services. Existing militia
companies had headed for Charleston. Every community was organizing a
volunteer group for thefight. Older men, even those with no previous
military training, did not wantto be left out. They organized themselves
into groups they generally called"Home Guards."
The Yorkville Enquirer published its list of the officers of the
Yorkville Home Guards on April 25, 1861: Asbury Coward, Capt.; DR A.
BARRON, 1st. Lieut.; G. W. Williams, 2nd. Lieut.; J. G. Enloe, 3rd.
Lieut.; J. C. Phillips, 1st. Sgt.; J. R. Schorb, 2nd. Sgt.; L. M. Grist,
3rd. Sgt.; W. B.Wilson, 4th. Sgt.; B. T. Wheeler, 5th. Sgt. The group
represented men of wealth and prestige--court officials, academy heads,
lawyers, a newspaper editor, manufacturers, a doctor, etc. If there was
any Unionist sentiment in Yorkville it was well hidden throughout the
course of the war.
