Mary Ethel grew up in Hunt County, Texas, where her father was a rancherand cattle buyer. Her brother Raymond was quite a bit older and lefthome while Mary Ethel was still young. However, Mary E. and youngerbrother Paul were closer in age and remained close as adults.
Mary E. joined the Methodist Church of Quinlan, Texas, at the age of9, according to notes written in her own handwriting. Rev. Clark Russellwas pastor at that time. However, as an adult, she was baptized at theFirst Baptist Church of Orange, Texas.
For a few years, in the early 1920s, her family lived in Snyder inScurry County, Texas. It was there that Mary E. met her future husband.One day, Emma Steger, Mary Ethel's mother, was having trouble milking anuncooperative cow. She sent Mary Ethel down the road to get one of theMcKeown boys to help her. The McKeown "boy" who came to help was WillieGreen. Willie Green and Mary Ethel were married in 1922, when she was 17and he was 28.
Though her first child was born in Snyder, Willie Green and Mary E.moved shortly after. They later lived in Jacksonville, Brenham, and SanMarcos. Their final home was in Orange, where they lived from about 1943until Mary Ethel died in 1982. She is buried in Hillcrest MemorialGardens in Orange County, Texas.
Mary Ethel is lovingly remembered by this compiler, who as a smallchild, was often rocked to sleep as her grandmother hummed "The MissouriWaltz."
