Notities over Nancy Beasley Richardson [8 Bu]

John A. Richardson
by H. David Richardson
John A. Richardson was born on May 7, 1843 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. He was the third son born to parents Green C. Richardson and Nancy Beasley Richardson. Green later moved his family to Cobb County, Georgia and settled in the Marietta District and Blackwell Community. 1860 census records reveal that John received some schooling during that year. John lived with his family in Cobb County, Georgia until he enlisted at 17 years of age in Company B, "Kennesaw Infantry", 41st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment on March 4, 1862 along with his older brother William H. Richardson. The Confederate Conscription Act Of 1862 required white southern males aged 18-35 to perform military service. John would have been of military age on May 4, 1862. It is important to note that John and his brother did not enlist in the confederate army to defend the institution of slavery. The Richardson family did not own slaves although John was a descendant of Reuler Richardson, a slave owner, in Virginia. John served faithfully with his unit until their final surrender at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865. On May 28, 1865 John received his final payment of $1.17 and one Mexican silver dollar ! John had not been paid for over a year prior to the surrender ! He was discharged and paroled on May 1, 1865. It has been recounted through family oral histories that John kept his rifle after the surrender and stopped a yankee soldier at gun point from cheating an old southern farmer out of a horse while returning home to Georgia. After the close of the war, John married Martha Ann Banister Dukes on November 15, 1866 in Cobb County. Martha was the daughter of John Banister of Cobb County. She was born ca. 1844-1845 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. Their first child, Dillard Lee Richardson, was born October 16, 1867 in Cobb County. At some point, John decided to leave Georgia and relocate to Arkansas. It has been recounted through family oral histories that John had remarked to his brother William on at least one occasion that "he was not going to stay and farm that clay hill forever." John was likely inspired to leave by an earlier migration of Banister's, Dunn's and Hairston's to Columbia County in southwest Arkansas around 1855 led by Cobb Countian James K. Dunn. In addition, John had an elder brother, Robert, who had left Georgia before 1860 and went to Lafayette County in southwest Arkansas himself. One other important factor that possibly motivated John to leave Georgia were the harsh conditions imposed upon the North Georgia population by the corrupt reconstruction governments. 1870 census records reveal that John, Martha and Dillard were living in the Alabama Township of Columbia County, Arkansas on or before the census was taken on July 9, 1870. In 1871, the Alabama Township was taken out of Columbia County and placed in the newly created Nevada County. After the reorganization, John and his family lived in the Parker Township near Bodcaw. John and Martha had a total of eight children. Martha Ann Richardson died on January 30, 1892 in Nevada County at age 47. Her obituary was printed in the March 17, 1892 Marietta Journal in Georgia. On April 20, 1892, John married N.A. "Nanny" Irvin or Irving in Nevada County. They had one son, Newton E. "Elmer" Richardson, who died at a young age. He was buried in Union Cemetery. His grave is now marked. John died on September 26, 1907 in Nevada County at 64 years of age. He was buried in the Union Cemetery next to his first wife Martha Ann Richardson. Both graves are now marked after being unmarked for many years. The Tuesday Evening, Ocotber 1, 1907 edition of The Prescott Daily News printed the following obituary for John A. Richardson: "News from Bodcaw", Bodcaw, September 29 - Another veteran of the heroic band, that maintained the south's unparalleled valor during the civil war has passed to "that undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns." Mr. John Richardson, a confederate veteran, a well-to-do farmer and one of our best citizens died on the 27th inst. His bereaved ones will have the condolence of his comrades as well as a host of other friends. H. David Richardson 41st Georgia Historian G.B.S.H.H.A.
