William Riley Cox Sr., 85, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2010.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
He was the son of Roy T. and Jane Kittrell Cox and grandson of A.G. Cox of Winterville. Riley was a native of Winterville and longtime resident of Greenville. He attended Winterville High School and graduated from Greenville High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on the destroyer escort USS Weber, making six trips across the North Atlantic. He was commissioned to the officer rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. In 1949, he graduated from Wake Forest University with a major in math. He retired as vice president and branch manager of N.C. Equipment Co. after 36 years of service.
Riley was past member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Winterville and St. James United Methodist Church. In 1967, he was awarded Kiwanian of the Year. He taught Sunday school and was active in the Cub Scouts. In his earlier years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Riley's passion was working in his yard, cooking and being with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy T. Cox Jr. and Louis G. Cox (both killed in WWII), B. Vernon Cox and A.G. Cox; and sister, Blair C. Wheless.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Gay Marrow Cox; son, Bill Cox and his wife, Susan; daughter, Myrla C. Florstedt; sister, Marian C. McGlohon, all of Greenville; and grandchildren, Brandon Cox of Charlotte, Chad Florstedt of Blacksburg, Va., Lauren Cox of Wilmington and Hillary Florstedt of Richmond, Va.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. The family deeply appreciates your thoughtfulness and kindness.
