Jennie Bonner Young, the daughter of Rev. James Mathews Young and Elizabeth Ann Craig, was born on October 13th 1858 in Marion Junction, Dallas County, Alabama. Jennie, the 3rd of five children was educated at home and as a young child; saw Sherman's Army march by their plantation home, as she hide under the front steps. After the war, Jennie graduated from the Women's College in Mobile.
Jennie was married to Rev. James Little Young on October 17th 1883, in Dallas county, Alabama. Rev. Young , originally from Due West, South Carolina was a minister of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, like her father. Jennie and James had five children:
Euphemia Jane (1884-1973)
James Ulric (1886-1977)
Mary Harris (1887-1976)
Flora Craig (1889-1914)
Katherine Strong (1890-1981)
In the early years of their marriage, Rev. Young was preaching in areas that were just getting started; he was doing mission work; so life for the family was not always as refined as Jennie was accustom. But once Rev. Young accepted the position as pastor of Monticello A.R.P. in Arkansas; life became more settled.
In 1904, Rev. Young died, leaving Jennie a widow with five children at the age of 46. Jennie moved her family to Tarkio, Mississippi where there was a Presbyterian college that the children could attend and she started a boarding house for college students to help with the expenses; with all five children graduating from Tarkio College.
In 1914, Jennie moved to Kansas City, Missouri and lived with her only son, James' family and later in 1917, moved to Waterloo, Iowa to lived with her daughters Katherine and Mary.
Due to an injury of an eye, many years before; Jennie became totally blind the last twenty-five years of her life. She learned to read by braille and continued to read her favorite passages using a braille bible.
Jennie Bonner Young Young departed this life at the age of 90 on the 20th day of January 1949 in Waterloo; where she had lived for over 20 years. She was returned to Oakland Cemetery and laid to rest beside her husband, James.
