The Honorable Hammett McElroy, one of the oldest living settlers ofRandolph County, Ark.1 was born in Madison County, Mo. March 9,1812 itbeing then a portion of Louisiana Territory. He is a son of Samuel andElizabeth (McLain) McElroy, the father's birth occurring in CulpepperCounty, Va. In 1781, and his death in Randolph County, Ark. April 8,1853.The early youth and manhood he and his brother Andrew J. McElroy workedfor their father until about sixteen years old, learning in the meantimethe hatter's trade and after that time began working for themselves. In1844 Hammett turned his attention to farming and his labors in thisdirec-tion have been attended with good results, he being now the ownerof 650 acres of excellent land, a considerable portion of which is richbottom soil. He was an extensive trader in grain and stock, and has donemuch shipping in the early days on flatboats down the river. In politicshe has always been a Democrat, and in 1850 he was elected to representRan-dolph County in the State Legislature, and in 1852 was re-elected tothe same office. July 11, 1863 he married Miss Elizabeth Davis, adaughter of Lot and Mary Davis, who came from Iron County, Mo., to thiscounty in 1818. She was born May 14, 1815, and died Feb. 1, 1871, havingbeen an earnest member of the Baptist church for many years. Five oftheir ten children are now living:

2. Thomas J. McElroy-a farmer living near Dalton, Ark. born 1840 andmarried 1881 Miss White. He was opposed to secession though he was astrong Democrat like his father. He began life for himself and wife whenhe was twenty-one, on land purchased from his father (Hammett Mc-Elroy).They had seven children: - Mary White was the daughter of Howell andElizabeth (Stubbelfield) White, natives of Randolph County. Althoughopposed to secession he was in a number of skirmishes and although heserved in actual warfare for only a short time he was en-rolled until theclose of the war, His enlistment period is from 1861 to 1865 under Gen.Price. He surrendered at Jacksport, Ark. June 5 1865. He then came homeand engaged in farming, again, and stock raising. At that time he owned130 acres land, he is now the owner of about 500 acres, He also ownsconsiderable personal property and makes a specialty of raising mules.His farmland is consider among the best in the County, with good barnsand other buildings. He takes a great interest in school affairs and is aliberal supporter of all laudable enterprises. His children were:
