1880 Census, Riley Township, Pope County, Arkansas, Family 153, Farmer.
Died of Tuberculosis, 200 years after first Oates arrived in America. May have contracted the disease from Warner Carroll, a nephew of Lourella's, who he cared for until Warner's death about 20 years before his death.
In his younger years, he hunted bear, deer, and small game along the Petit Jean river, using a muzzle loading rifle and shotgun.
While a young boy, fell from a fence and against a scythe. He carried a long, deep scar across his hip until his death. He also had a double hernia in the groin area and wore a truss for many years.
He wore a beard and mustache until he was around 60 years old. At that time, he shaved the beard but kept the mustache for the remainder of his life.
He loved to play 42 and loved to sing. Sang from the Sacred Harp and Christian Harmony hymnals the same songs he had learned from his parents in Arkansas. These songs were sung acapello, but he had a tuning fork to give the correct pitch. He also loved to read.
He was handy with tools and was good at woodworking and his tools were always sharp and clean. He also owned a forge and other blacksmith tools.
He was strict about Sabbath observance and took literally the command not to work on the sabbath, only taking care of the livestock and milking the cow.
He always kept two milk cows so as to have one fresh while the other was dry since he liked milk and butter. Ron Turner is in possession of his butter churn.
He loved and trusted the Lord. He loved the 23rd Psalm and often quoted it during his final illness. He never used profanity nor engaged in suggestive jokes or stories.
He worked hard, loved people, and lived a clean life. Although he knew only poverty all of this life, he remained cheeful and optimistic.
He was a tenant farmer and moved frequently, never living in one house longer than three years. He never owned a home of his own and there was never enough money for more than bare existence.
