   Transcript of the Will of Thomas Norman, filed November 1818, from FHL Film 18974, Granville County, North Carolina, Record of Wills, Book 8, p. 176-178.
   In the name of God amen. I Thomas Norman being in perfect mind and memory, and desirous of disposing of that Estate I have been blessed with in this life, do make ordain publish declare and pronounce this to be my last Will & Testament and give and dispose of the same in the following manner.
   Im primes – I give and bequeath to my Beloved Wife Sally Norman during her life Negroes John, London, Dalby, James, Inlea, Stephen, Matilda, Abner Lethia my dwelling house and all my land & plantation on the East side of the creek or as much thereof as will be necessary for wife Sally to cultivate with the hands given to her and a sufficiency for pasturage, But not to be

   rented out. Also I give and Bequeath to my Beloved Wife Sally Norman during her life my house hold and kitchen furniture, my plantation tools three head of horses twelve head of cattle twelve head of sheep to be chosen by herself, half of my hogs a sufficiency of the crop for one years provisions for her se[l]f and family. The use of my still and as many of my Books as she may choose, to her for and during the the term of her life as aforesaid.
   Item I give and Bequeath to my Daughter Mary Kittrell two negroes Anatry and Caesar, and their increase together with the property I have heretofore given her and her heirs forever.
   Item I give and Bequeath to my Daughter Margaret Pulliam one negro man By the name of Brister to her and her heirs forever.
   Item I have heretofore given to my Daughters Temperance Pulliam and Agness Reeks what property I intended them to have They are therefore to have no further part of my estate.
   Item I give and Bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Jones one negro girl named Charity and her Increase to her her heirs and assigns forever and no more having given to her what I intended her to have.
   Item I give and Bequeath to my grandson John P. Norman one negro girl named Mary & her increase to him and his heirs forever.
   Item I give and Bequeath to my son Thomas Norman the following negroes Lee, America Rose Cate Lovelace with their increase to him and his heirs and assigns forever.

   Item I give and Bequeath to my son Thomas Norman the Rest and Residue of my property not heretofore given and all the negroes Land & Stock Household & Kitchen furniture and Estate of every kind lent to my wife Sally after her death I give and beaueath to my son Thomas Norman his heirs and assigns forever.
   Lastly I hereby nominate and appoint my wife Sally Executrix and my son Thomas Executor To this last Will & Testament hereby Revoking disannulling and declaring void all other wills heretofore made in testimony where I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 25th day of July A. D. 1818.

   Spotswood Burwell } of Thomas Norman Senr was entered for
   Jonathan Davis } probate by Thomas W. Norman and
   } Sarah Norman Executor & Executrix
   } upon William Jones & Betsy his wife
   } came into Court [illegible] Reeks & Agness
   } his wife came into Court and entered a
   } caveat thereto and I found [illegible] vis a
   } vis val [illegible] was ordered to be made up
   } between the Executors and said William &
   }wife and Thomas & wife to test the validity
   } of said paper writing & whether was
   good and lawful meant [illegible phrase]

   Granville County} November Court A.D. 1818
   the foregoing account of Sales was duly authorized
   on oath in open court by William Sneed adm, and
   ordered to be recorded
   certificate cont. from p. 177 } the issue afore Witness} said and they found the foregoing }
   paper writing writing to be the last will and testament of Thomas Norman Sen. Decd and } Step Sneed
   that he did devise and bequeath as therein stated. Judgment of the court that the same be } Clk
   recorded and that the defendants pay all costs whose upon Sally Norman } Witness
   Thomas W. Norman named as Executrix and Executor } Step Sneed Clk
   in said will came into Court & duly qualified as such.
