Per Marion C. Todd in a message on Columbus NC, NC Query Forum dated 29 Dec 1999
"It is my belief that Elizabeth Hickman Todd's mother was a daughter of Joseph Dewitt, and her father was Samuel Hickman. Now my reason -- in 1848 when the estate of Joseph DeWitt was settled, there is a widow and sixteen heirs, of these heirs six are Hickmans -
Elizabeth Hickman Todd, Sarah Hickman Williams, William James Hickman, Jane Hickman Hughes, Ed. F. Hickman and W. I. Hickman.
I know William J. is a son of Samuel from a deed, and when Samuel Todd died in 1829, William J. was the executor of his estate. Also Sarah and Jane have been proven through a deed.
Samuel Porter Todd, a son of Elizabeth Hickman Todd named sons Samuel, William, Isaac, and Edward also William J. Hickman had a son Samuel Porter Hickman who served in the house of S. C. and he was a first cousin of Edward Hickmkan Todd, the eldest son of Elizabeth Hickman Todd. This also proves the connection. I have a lady in Columbus searching the estate papers of Joseph DeWitt, maybe this will shed morelight on this whole situation. I hope this helps.
