General Notes: Photo of their Café in File (I. B.).
Under the photo is the following caption (I. B.): -
The "Vennebuurt" was not the oldest area in Delfzijl. However the
large area (in the background) and the small area (in theforeground)
had a respectable life style. The area was thickly populated, there
were in the main, small houses where behind the doors manyfamilies
lived. Such a family lived in one room with two beds; a small dark
kitchen wherein a ladder stood so that men could gain access tothe
loft (ceiling space). There was an outside toilet. The rents were
low, but even so, many had great difficulty in paying the rent.
Conditions were very hard with much poverty. Many dwellersworked in
the harbour as casual labour. There were many small shops. InWillem
Street stood four Cafés. In the photo of around 1920 you can seeon
the left the Café "of Eems" of Jan van der LUIT, and on the right the
Café of H. BROEKEMA where you could play cards and billiards. On the
edge of town stood the Post Office.
