MILITARY SERVICE
Richard Muse and his Brother Thomas Sanford Muse were Patriots and fought in the Revolutionary War. Richard enlisted August 1775 Wythe Co. Virginia and fought under the command of Capt. Wm Herbert, James Neville and Lt. Col. Campbell. His military career was comprised of three separate enlistment's' and discharges. His service earned him a recommendation and appointment as an Ensign in Captain Pearce's Company. Richard service involved protecting the Frontier to the Clinch River in Tazwell Co. Va, and he marching against the Shawnee Indians. In his pension application he state he was discharged after the "Making of the Peace". This information can be found in the Pulaski County Ky. Courthouse.
CIVIL SUIT
On 3 August 1804 Richard filed suit against the estate of his deceased brother Thomas Sanford Muse, who died in 1802. Richard stated that he was the only heir to his brother's estate that Thomas's wife Susannah and her friends persuaded Thomas, a hypochondriac, to revoke a will in favor of Richard and make another dated 19th July 1802. Alexander Smythe, who married Susannah's sister, drew up the Will of Thomas Muse. Susannah told the court that Richard was not sole heir to Thomas's estate and that Richard had half brothers and sisters from his mother's second marriage. "Chronicles of Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia", by Lyman Chalkley, pub 1912.
CHILDREN OF Richard
In Richard's own pension statement (filed on February 18, 1839 in Pulaski Co. Kentucky ) he stated "I did not apply earlier due to I could support myself and my family and now that I am old (86 years of age) and unable to support my large family and myself". His pension was granted on 30 September 1839. However only two children are proven in his Will (John and Thomas) filed in Pulaski Co. Ky. The others are Unproven or probable based on weak or strong circumstantial evidence.
The following children are proven only based on that Richard consented in writing (on file at the Pulaski County Court House) for them to Wed, Jiney Muse, Poly Muse and James Muse.
The following child is proven by handwritten consent to marry by Richard and a letter written by Luther Muse (Great Grandson of John Muse son of Richard) dated 1926 who stated "My Great Grandfather was John Muse who had brothers James and Thomas Muse." A family member of this line provided the above information to Lou Murphy. This family member, according to Lou is a direct descendant through Samuel Gilmore Muse Jr. who was the son of Samuel Gilmore Sr who was the son of John Muse.
Isaac Muse, Richard Muse (of Bedford Co. Tennessee.) and Sarah Muse are probable children based on circumstantial evidence. (see notes under Isaac Sr.).
Henry, Christine and Susannah are unproven and based on the Marriage records of Wythe Co. Va. and the fact that Richard Muse and these Children were the only Muse's in the same geographical location before Richard moved from Wythe Co. Va. to Pulaski Co. Kentucky.
Probable birth dates of Richards Children are based off of census record information or based off marriage information. Legal marriage ages that we have established through our research revealed that Females 18 and older and Males 21 older did not require written permission. Otherwise, written permission was obtained from the parent or legal guardian. In most cases were written permission for the bride was not obtained the Surety of the marriage declared the bride of age and the groom declared himself of age.
LAND GRANTS AND DEEDS
When Richard and Margaret decided to leave Virgina in 1805 they sold over 2,500 acres of land before moving permanently to Kentucky. Richard Muse did not receive any grants for land in Kentucky as part of his service in the Revolution but he is on record of receiving numerous grants under the "South of Green River Grants" on White Oak Creek and Fishing Creek in Pulaski County. These Green River Grants totaled to 623 acres
