FORMER DEL REY BANK MANAGER CHARLES MONTANYE DIES AT 78
Charles Crowell Montanye, a long-time Fowler farmer who formerly managed the Del Rey branch of the Bank of America, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Selma District Hospital. He was 78.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Wallin and Son chapel, Sanger. Interment will be in the Sanger District Cemetery. The Rev. Frank Starkey of the Oakhust Community Church will officiate.
Mr. Montanye was born in White Plains, N.Y., on Nov. 28, 1908. As a child, he briefly lived and attended school in the Clovis area. His family moved to San Francisco in 1920. He was graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City and attended William Warren Military School (now Menlo College) in Menlo Park.
In 1927, he joined his mother Edith on an around-the-world cruise which led him into his banking career. He lived in London for two years, working on the Bank of England staff. Returning to San Francisco in 1930, he joined a brokerage firm which had ties to Bank of America.
The bank assigned Mr. Montanye to its Selma branch in 1939. Two years later, he was transferred to the Del Rey branch, where he was named manager in 1943. Mr. Montanye resigned from the bank in 1947 and the next year went into farming, acquiring a 40-acre ranch on Sumner Avenue just west of Fowler where he lived the rest of his life.
He was a member of the Holland Society (a group of descendants of early Dutch New Yorkers) and Fresno County Horse Owners Association. Mr. Montanye was a life member of the Fresno County Sheriff's Posse. For 29 years, he was a member of Fresno Elks Lodge No. 439.
Surviving are his wife, Helen, of Fowler, and three sons, Charles M. of Turlock, Monty E. of Fresno, and James H. of Fresno.
The family requests that any remembrances be made to the California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, 5450 E. Lamona Ave., Fresno 93727, or the Selma District Hospital Foundation, Box 543, Selma 93662.
