Subject: Catherine Montagne b 1761 married John Van Varick baker 1802
I am a descendant of the Van Varick seeking to determine for a distant Varick cousin if Catherine Montagne is their direct ancestor. They descend from Peter Van Varick b 1806 on John Street, whose mother's married name was Catherine Van Varick, but they do not know who was the father of Peter, which father may have died when he was young. Peter is listed as a student in the Dutch Reformed Church school during 1814-21 with Catherine Van Varick as his parent. His father may well have been the John Van Varick, baker, on John Street in the 1801-1805 NYC business directories. Your citation of a source for the 28 March 1802 DRC marriage of Catherine Montagne and John Van Varick. I am therefore hoping to find the birth or baptism record (presumably within the DRC) for Peter Van Varick ca 1806 (or during 1804-07), which might confirm if they were his parents, but so far cannot find any such records. I would greatly appreciate help in this identification of whether Paeter Van Varick is Catherine Montagne Van Varick's child, although she would have been in her mid-40s when Peter was born during 1804-07, and already 40 when she married John Van Varick, the baker. The fact that Catherine Van Varick was a widow in 1810, and that she died in 1825, seems to fit our Catherine Montagne, b. 1761. We know she was not married in 1798 when her father died (had probably been his housekeeper after the death of her mother) and all of the younger Catherine Montagnes are otherwise accounted for, so I think it highly probable that Catherine married John when they both were in their 40s and had just one child, Peter, before John died (after 1806 but before 1810).
