In 1805, John Van Varick the baker who married Catherine Montagne, was found in four land deeds, whereby he purchased 4 lots in Hoboken NJ for $1790 and then he (identified as baker from Manhattan) and his wife Catherine sold them speculatively 3 days later for $4000.
Is this John the same as Johannes Van Varick, baptized NYRDC 16 Jan 1754, son of Johannes Van Varik and Antje Schats? His baptismal sponsors were Baltus Van Vleck and wife Sara Van Varik. This would seem to be a possible identity for John Van Varick, baker, who married Catherine Montagne in 1802.
"We know a lot about Johannes Van Varik, in that he married Martha Smith and had at least four children: John Van Varick bpt 28 Apr 1776 (this the younger candidate earlier proposed) Martha Van Varick bpt 08 Nov 1783 Ann Van Varick bpt 31 May 1786 John Skinner Varick bpt 04 Jan 1789 Fortunately, we have YDNA results from a direct male descendant of the last son, John Skinner Varick, and if the YDNA results for our descendant of Peter Van Varick (who might be a younger half-brother) closely match, we could construct a good case for this possibility, if we can establish that Martha Smith, the first wife, died prior to 1802. We will also look for evidence that Johannes Van Varick was a baker, but that was generally the family business of the whole family for the previous 2 generations, a tradition long maintained by those who didn't become richer merchants. I still hope, however, to find Peter Van Varick's own 1806 baptismal record." Message from William Garner on 5 July 2015.
