Notities over Willem de la Montagne

Willem Mousnier de la Montagne was the youngest child of Dr. Johannes de la Montagne and his first wife Rachel DeForest.  He was born on Manhattan Island and baptized on 22 April 1641 in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam.  He was rich in baptismal sponsors, led by the Director of the entire colony of New Netherland, Willem Kieft (for whom he was undoubtedly named), Domine Everardus Bogardus, Marritje Thymes, and Cataline Strafele.

Willem's mother died when Willem was just two years old, and it is believed that his oldest sister Rachel took special responsibility for him as a child.  When Dr. La Montagne and his second wife moved to Fort Orange (later Albany) in 1656, Willem was fifteen years old and went with them and his step-brother Johannes Provoost, who was then nineteen years old.

However, by 1661 Willem was back in Harlem with his older brother Jan Jr.  The two of them, along with their brother-in-law Jacobus Kip, sent a petition to Director Peter Stuyvesant and Council on 4 July 1661, asking for permission to settle a small village on the plantation of Vredendal, the tobacco plantation belonging to Dr. La Montagne and abandoned at the time of the Indian troubles.  Although the request was denied, the Council took pains to placate the Montagnes.  Willem was appointed schoolmaster in New Harlem in 1662 and was always styled "Meester Willem" in the Town Clerk's records. Willem was also allowed to become a freeholder in New Harlem by the purchase of the usual allotment.

In 1664 Willem set up as a winedealer in partnership with his brother-inlaw Dr. Gysbert Van Imbroch.  Willem imported the wine, and may therefore have spent his time between Esopus and Manhattan, but after Dr. Van Imbroch died, Willem moved permanently to Esopus.  He was one of three guardians appointed by the court to take care of the three Van Imbroch orphans, but he was the guardian who administered the estate and who watched over Rachel's children, although he did not take them into his own household until his marriage.

Willem was appointed schoolmaster at Esopus (now Kingston, NY) on 7 June 1666, voorleser in 1667, town clerk on 28 April 1668, distiller in 1669, and vendue master in 1671.  The Kingston court records between 1665 and 1670 show Willem de la Montagne actively trying to collect debts owned to the estate of Dr. Van Imbroch.

Willem lived at Esopus/Kingston initially and at Mombaccus later.  He married Eleanora de Hooges, daughter of Anthony de Hooges and Eva Albertse Bratt, banns published at Kingston Reformed Dutch Church on 19 May 1673.  Eleanora de Hooges was born at Rensselaerswyck, probably about 1655, the youngest of five children.  Her father had been the business manager for the Van Rensselaer family at Rensselaerswyck from 1644 to 1648; thereafter, until his death, he was Secretary of Rensselaerswyck.  He died at Fort Orange on 11 October 1655.  His widow married Roelof Swartout about 13 August 1657, and Roelof Swartout was the only father that Eleanora ever knew.  Swartout was appointed schout (sheriff) at Esopus on 15 April 1660 and settled there with his wife, three stepchildren, and his own growing family.

Aalthough his official duties were quite heavy,  Willem was also involved with several business ventures and he gained a reputation as a fair man by both Dutch and English governments.
Willem was appointed High Sheriff of Ulster County, now part of the state of New York, on 24 December 1689 by Leisler.  He was replaced by Johannes Hardenbrook on 30 July 1690.  It is not known how Willem died, but it is clear that he died in 1690.

Willem's widow married Cornelis de Duyster in 1692, having a child Margriet de Duyster baptized in the Kingston Reformed Dutch Church on 23 April 1693.  Eleanora may have died in 1703, since the quit-rent roll for Mombaccus in 1729 notes that taxes had been paid "by the heirs of Wm. De Lamontanye" since 1703.  By the time Willem's land in Mombaccus was divided between his heirs, there were only three daughters and no sons named as heirs.  The list of freeholders for Ulster County in 1728 does not list any variation of the Montagne name, although all three sons-in-law of Willem are named there.  For these reasons, it is believed that all of Willem and Eleanora's descendants are from female lines and that, even though they did have three sons, they have no descendants bearing the Montagne surname today.

NOTE:  Riker lists another daughter, Johanna, b 1676, living 1699 [Riker 785] but, in fact, that Johanna was the daughter of Jan Jr. She has been listed as a child of Willem because she was a sponsor in 1699 in the Kingston Church for a Vredenburgh baptism (her husband's family) and for a Decker baptism (her cousin's family).  Johanna and her husband lived in New York City, but clearly visited their relatives in Kingston on occasion.
