=================

When Jesse de Forest and his wife Marie du Cloux baptized their first child, Marie, in 1602, the registers of the Huguenot Church at Sédan described Jesse as being a "merchant residing in this city." When Jean was baptized in 1604 and Henry in 1606, Jesse was still described as "merchant residing in this city."  However, when Elizabeth was baptized in 1607, Jesse was described as "merchant residing at Moncornet in Thierarche" and when David was baptized in 1608, Jesse was described as a "merchant-dyer", still living at Moncornet in Thierarche.  Moncornet is about halfway between Sédan and Avesnes, but it is a little further south in what used to be known as the French province of Picardy.  Today it is in yet a third département, the département of Aisne with its administrative center at Laon.  Clearly, Jesse and Marie went back to Sédan for the baptismal ceremonies, probably so that family members could serve as baptismal sponsors, but also because there may not have been a Huguenot Church in Moncornet.
There is an eight-year break in the registers of the Huguenot Church at Sédan, between 1609 and 1617, during which time it is assumed that Jesse and Marie continued to live at Moncornet and to bring babies, which surely included Rachel, back to Sédan for baptism.  Rachel could not have been born much later than 1609, since she would then have been younger than seventeen at the time of her marriage in 1626. There may have been a child called Anne, born in 1611 and another named Nicaise in 1613, as claimed by some family historians, but the claim seems to be based on naming patterns rather than baptismal evidence.
By 1615, Jesse and Marie and their children had moved north to Leyden, in Holland, as their son Jesse was presented for baptism on 1 March 1615 there.  They seem to have stayed at Leyden thereafter, as Isaac was baptized there in 1616, Israel in 1617, and Philippe in 1620.  In 1622, Jean, Henry, and Rachel (the oldest living children of Jesse and Marie) joined the Walloon Church at Leyden by confession of faith.
In July 1621 the Huguenot heads of family in Leyden, including Jesse de Forest, addressed a petition to the British Ambassador at The Hague, asking for permission to establish a Huguenot colony in Virginia.  In that petition, Jesse de Forest described himself as a married man with five children.  Those five children must have been four sons, Jean, Henry, Jesse, and Isaac, and one daughter, Rachel. These are the only children who are mentioned in the Leyden records after 1621;  the others must have died in childhood.
In 1623, Jesse de Forest, by then acknowledged leader of the Huguenot community in Leyden, led a group of eleven men to the Amazon River, the Orinoco River. and the coast of Guiana in South America to look for a site to establish a Huguenot colony.
Marie DuCloux and her five children had remained in Leyden between 1623-1625 while Jesse de Forest and the Huguenot heads of families were exploring in South America, not knowing that Jesse had died in Guiana.  Jesse's brother, Gérard de Forest, had requested permission to take over the privilege of "dyer in colors" after his brother's departure and it was granted to him on 4 January 1624.  Ever since then, Gérard de Florest had been in charge of the de Forest family business affairs, a leadership role he played for the rest of his life.
Louis le Maire and Jehan Mousnier de la Montagne brought the bad news of Jesse's death to Marie DuCloux upon their return to Holland in 1625.  She was thereafter called widow in the Leyden records.  It is not known when Marie DuCloux died.  Her last known appearance in the Walloon records in Leyden was at the marriage of her only living daughter Rachel to Dr. Jehan Mousnier de la Montagne on 28 November 1626.
