EDUCATION-OCCUPATION-RESIDENCES-DEATH-PROBATE: "Virginia Genealogies",by Rev. Hayden, M.A., Wilkes Barre, PA, 1891; "The Peytons of Virginia", compiled by the Peyton Society of VA, 1976; NOTE: Henrymade his way to considerable eminence from a modest start entirely onhis own ability; came up to London from Gloucester early in the reignof James I as a "servant" or clerk to Sir Thomas Overbury, a gentlemanwho had a rapid rise and a rapid fall at the Court of King James andwas imprisoned in the Tower; Henry then entered Gray's Inn andLincoln's Inn, Middlesex Co; Henry Peyton, Esquire was a Sworn Clerkof the High Court of Chancery in London as early as 1625 and one ofthe six Chief CLerks in 1630; in 1631-2 he was apptd. one of twoExaminers of the High Court of Chancery and continued to so serve in1647; he pursued the idea of becoming a Barrister for awhile, butapparently not to the last stage of preparation, although he wascalled to the Bar in 1649; having married in the early 1620s andhaving had 12 children in 15 years, he doubtless had to earn hisliving as a Clerk or Examiner while hoping to pursue the law as aprofessions; in 1633 he asked Sir Edward Peyton of Iselham, who wasthen head of the family, for authorization to bear the Peyton arms, asone "branched out from the family"; by a deed dated 20 Nov 1633, SirEdward granted him the right to bear the Peyton arms with a differenceof "bordure, ermine"; this grant was confirmed by Sir John Borough theGarter King of Arms; described as an "Armiger", a person entitled tobear heraldic arms in indenture of son Heny; he evidently l. inChancery Lane from his appointment as Clerk and d. in his fineresidence located there; he and his sons rode with the "Cavaliers" inthe Civil War, which probably explains why he sent four sons to VA in 1653 shortly after Oliver Cromwell established the Protectorate.
Probate: 6 MAY 1656 London, ENGL Event: Land Sale 1637 Surrey, ENGL Note: Shortly afterwards the settlement of the estate of his father-in-lawWilliam Clifton Henry sold this property. Not far away Sir EdwardPeyton (Henry's mentor) had an of the Peyton family lived in otherparishes. 1 Event: Will of William Clifton Administrator 1635 Note: William's will was proved by "Henry Peyton, Esq., husband ofKatherine Peyton, daughter of the deceased; Bridget Clifton, relict, and Mary Clifton, daughter of the deceased, having renounced." Event: Financial woes 1650 London, ENGL Note: Henry Peyton obviously suffered financially during this period. As he stated in 1650 in reference to his daughter's marriage settlement woes"the tymes very troublesome and full of distraccon, and ye Orator not beingthen well fitted to marrye a daughter, did request the said Godfrye Lee todesist his sd suite."
2 Event: of Blaisdon Lord 1638
Note: Henry Peyton was Lord of Blaisdon in 1638. It is possible that with the proceeds of the money realized from the sale of his father-in-law's estate in 1637, he was in a position to purchase a moiety in Blaisdon, OR Blaisdon may have come TO Henrythrough the moiety of one of the many families that lived therethrough the years.
There was no Blaisdon Hall in Henry's time. In fact there was no Blaisdon Hall until 1876. The original manor was no more than a farm.I believe that the remains of this old farm have now gone.
I have traced the moiety of Blaisdon from the original land belonging to Flaxley Abbey in ancient times down to the year 2000. Some of these families have connections to the Peytons, albeit, rather distant. [Joanne Hughes]
