Antje Ellens, was born near the village of Burum, Province of Friesland, the Netherlands on November 13, 1876. She had little opportunity for formal education because of the economic status of her family. Although she had little schooling, Antje did learn many Bible texts and Psalms. Despite the very meager income in the Old Country, she was able to save enough to buy a pair of ice skates - a prize possession which she brought along to America. When she came to this country she experienced considerable language difficulty with her mistresses as she worked at house work. Her average wage $1.50 per week with Sunday afternoon and evening off. During 1897 Antje married Harm Heuker.

Harm and his friend Siete Ouwinga immigrated on the same ship as Antje's brother John, who came ahead of his family. Obviously John must have introduced Harm and Siete to Antje and Johanna.
They were married by Rev. Sipke Sevensma. The marriage was witnessed by Sjoukje Ellens and Geeskien Sevensma.
Three children had come into this family, when, in November of 1902, Harm and Antje with their children moved to Highland Township., Osceola County, Michigan. Here they bought a forty acre patch of timber. A plot was cleared for a tar paper, shanty which was built. Although this dwelling was very crude and meager, the Heukers were very thankful for a home of their own. They lived in this shanty for six years, undergoing many hardships. They farmed for three years without horses. Harm worked out for other farmers by hand and in return was able to get his "horse work" done. In 1908 a frame house was built which presently is the home of the John Heuker family. Seven years later a frame barn was built. (This barn was blown down in a windstorm in 1943 but was soon rebuilt.) Harm and Antje were affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church of Lucas until 1914 when the Highland Christian Reformed Church was organized. They then became charter members of this church and throughout their lives were active in it. In 1945 Harm and Antje retired from the farm and moved to a little house near the Highland Church.
