   Early passenger lists were single page manifests and recorded minimal information about passengers. Over time forms were standardized and additional questions were added. Depending on the year, information recorded about a passenger may include name, age, gender, occupation, destination, and information regarding place of origin—e.g. native country, citizenship status, race, nationality, birthplace, or last residence. By 1907 passenger manifests contained 29 columns and were two-pages wide with left and right sides. These left and right sides appear as separate images, so be sure to use the "previous" and "next" arrow buttons in the image viewer in order to see all pages that pertain to a record. Two questions that were included on the manifest beginning in 1907 were: 1) name and address of nearest friend or relative in country whence the alien came; and 2) whether going to join a relative or friend, and if so, what relative or friend, and his name complete address. MyHeritage has indexed the names and relationships of the individuals referenced in these two additional questions, making MyHeritage the only place where these additional names are searchable.Records in this collection come from National Archives (NARA) microfilm collections M237 (Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897) and T715 (Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1897-1957).

   Population registers are registers that recorded and tracked the movements of all Netherlands residents. Please see the archive list below for coverage. In most municipalities population registers began in January 1850. However, in some localities these records date back much earlier. The majority of the records in this collection date between 1810 and 1936, though the extent of year coverage can vary by locality, and some records are available beyond this range.
   It is important to obtain a copy of the original record whenever possible, as the original record may provide additional context and details about an individual or family. For example, population registers typically recorded people in households and could indicate family relationships. They also provided detailed information regarding residence (where the family or person moved to or from, and the date of their change in residence). Changes in the composition of a household due to events such as birth, marriage, and death, were also noted in the registers.

   Crew lists are a valuable source of information for genealogists who cannot find immigrants on passenger manifests. However, not all crew members who were discharged in New York City remained in the United States. Many crew members were discharged from one vessel and immediately joined another vessel departing from New York City.
   While it is apparent that some cards have names on both the front and back sides, unfortunately only one side was captured in the microfilm. The original cards were destroyed after the microfilm was transferred to the National Archives resulting in the loss of all information on the reverse side of the cards. The images are of varying quality and it may be worth searching NARA publication T715 for additional information.
