"My mother was Margaret Aileen Peacock Raphael, the daughter of Corbet Alfred and Mary Brookfield Peacock. I think her father was from Manchester, England and her mother from London, Canada. I knew these grandparents well but remember very little of their earliest background. Yes, my mother was born in Denver, Arapahoe, Colorado, USA. My father was Eugene (Gene) William Raphael. I knew his parents at a very early age but not well enough to give you further information. I know they lived in San Francisco. My oldest sister was Virginia Aileen Raphael. She became ill with tuberculosis and died when she was seventeen, almost eighteen. I was twelve at the time. My next sister was Miriam Patricia Raphael; she was always known as Patricia. She too died, from an accident, at an early age, eighteen and almost nineteen. I had entered the Holy Names Convent in Oakland just three months before Pat died. We had a younger sister, Joan, who was seven years younger than I. My mother became quite ill soon after Joan was born and my mother’s family took Joan because she was only a tiny baby. When my mother died after a long illness, her family adopted Joan and gave her the surname, Peacock. She became Joan Peacock but was our blood sister (for your genealogy). I was baptized and known as Margaret Elayne Raphael, but on becoming a Sister, received the name Sister Mary Herbert. For your records, I am 91 years old and have been a Holy Names Sister since July, 1934." (Interview of Arnold Chamove with Margaret Elaine Raphael)
