Information from Charles "Jeff" Fisher, a grandson, received July 14, 2006: "Etta believed that her mother came to Oakland, CA to visit with her brother, John Buhmann. It was at a meeting place known as "Altenhein" that she met Carl [Langpaap].e of the jobs that Carl performed upon returning to San Francisco was that of night watchman.f the city burn when the gas mains leaked. She attended Sutro Elementary School through the 8th grade and then helped support the family for a period of time as a child care provider. She attended Hahnemann Nursing School in San Francisco between 1915 and 1918, and once certified was a private nurse until the United States entered WWI, when she became a US Army lieutenant in the Nurse Corps, and was stationed at Letterman Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco, {now part of Golden Gate National Park}. It was at Letterman that Etta met the man she was to marry, Lt. Robert L. Allen, who was an artillery officer in France in the Summer of 1918, when in August, he was wounded in battle. After initial treatment in Paris, when he could travel, he was sent half way around the world to Letterman, the closest military hospital to his Portland, OR home. The couple married July 26, 1919 in San Francisco, and lived with Etta's mother, Marie during the final 3 months of her life. Marie died October 25, 1919. Robert and Etta continued to live in San Francisco for 3 more years, at which time they moved to Burlingame where Etta's sister Anna Cheney's family lived. In 1947, they moved to Sunnyvale living in and operating a pear orchard. In 1964, they moved to their final residence, Woodside, CA where they operated a shrub nursery."s and especially close to her sisters, Anna and Frances, and to her nearest brother in age, Gerhardt 'Gay'."dwood forested country, and built some rustic cabins there.
