"Dolores Alwood (August 4, 1922 - December 9, 2015)

Dolores Alwood’s life ended peacefully on Wednesday morning, December 9, 2015, at the Queen Anne Manor in Seattle where she had resided for the past year. She was 93.

Dolores was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington on August 4, 1922, to Matthew and Ella (Murphy) Kerr. She lived in Brady, Montesano and Aberdeen while growing up with her three brothers, Charles, Walter and Robert andher sister, Eileen and a number of cousins. She attended grade school in Brady and graduated from Montesano High School in 1940.

Following her high school graduation, Dolores initially secured a position working for the then president of the Grays Harbor Business College, partly in exchange for tuition, but then decided on a career change and went to work at St.Joseph's Hospital in the diet kitchen. She lived at the hospital, worked hard for $40 a month and waited for Saturday night to head to the Dreamland in Hoquiam to dance. It was there that she met her future husband, Horace Alwood. Therelationship flourished until, like many young men at that time, Horace joined the Army and headed to California for training. Shortly after he departed, two young women, Dolores and Vivian, one of Horace’s sisters, boarded a bus forCalifornia. Dolores married Horace at Minter Field in Bakersfield, California on July 29, 1942. She then traveled with Horace during his many training posts until he was deployed overseas. Returning to Aberdeen, Dolores attended GraysHarbor Business College and worked at the Assessor’s Office in Montesano. On Horace’s return, they lived a few years in Aberdeen and then moved to Hoquiam in 1952 where they raised their family. Horace died, too young, in 1973. Doloresthen went to work at the St. Joseph Hospital admitting office and moved to Aberdeen in 1976. ..." <>

Mom's service will be on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church, 200 L Street, Hoquiam, WA. There will be a rosary before the service, beginning at 10:30 for those who would like to attend. The graveside service is directly after at Sunset Memorial Park, 801 Sunset Drive, Hoquiam, WA and then therewill be lunch back at the church social hall.

Dolores was an active member of Our Lady of Good Help Catholic parish and St. Anthony’s Guild, volunteering for many church and school functions during her years in Hoquiam and St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the St. Elizabeth Guild duringher years in Aberdeen.

Dolores loved family gatherings, including the competitive card games. She also belonged to a Canasta Club and she and Horace continued their love for dancing, attending the annual Truckers Ball and hosting parties at their home. She wasblessed with many very close friends during her time in Hoquiam and Aberdeen. She was an active member of a group of mom’s in her Hoquiam neighborhood who met for coffee virtually every day of the work week for 20+ years … providingsupport to each other while raising their children, losing their husbands and just having fun with good friends. Overriding all of these relationships though was her lifelong very close relationship with her sister, Eileen. It wasspecial. They talked every day, provided loving support to each other and would at least once a week break out in hysterical laughter over something that struck them as incredibly humorous. They shared a joy for life together and many“blizzards” from Dairy Queen.

Dolores is survived by her son, Greg (Marybeth) Alwood; daughters, Colleen (Gary) Fikse and Teresa (Michael) Elstad; her nine grandchildren, Dr. Ashley Alwood, Darcie (Neal) Moeller, Andrew (Marissa) Alwood, Tyler Alwood, Melissa Fikse,Tommy Fikse, Samuel Fikse, Katie Elstad and Jacob Elstad, and a very recent arrival, her great grandson, Walter Moeller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace, her three brothers, Charles Kerr, Walter Kerr and Robert Kerr andher sister, Eileen (Kerr) Alwood.

The family wishes to acknowledge the special care provided to their mother by two very special caregivers during the last few years. Linda Gould from Aberdeen and Shoko Espinoza from Queen Anne Manor in Seattle provided comfort and careto Dolores and a very loving friendship that was extraordinary during the last years of her life.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm on Monday, December 28, 2015, and Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church, 200 “L” Street in Hoquiam with Father Brian D. Thompson as the presiding celebrant. It will be preceded by aRecitation of the Rosary at 10:30 a.m.

Interment at Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam will follow the funeral and a lunch reception will then be held at the church social center.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary of Hoquiam.
