Life Sketch

BIRTH: The children of William Smith of Farmington are identified by name and age in his inv of estate, 6 Jan 1669, Hartford, Conn. District Probate, 3:69 (FHL #004572). Benjamin was listed as being 11 yrs old in Apr 1669. Place of birth was almost certainly Farmington where the family is of record, 1655-1678.
CHR: Farmington 1st Congregational Church recs, 1:52 (FHL #004241). The given name appears to have been written later in pencil.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Mar is proved by the adm of estate of Samuel Loomis (father of Ruth) 30 Sept 1690, Hampshire Co. Probate, 2:54 (FHL #879184).
MAR #2: Springfield Vital Records, 1:120 (FHL #185414). This is a mar intention; actual mar rec not found in Springfield or Simsbury vital recs. Wife is called "widow Mary Buttolyth of Simsbury," no doubt the widow of David Buttolph of Simsbury, who died 5 Apr 1717. Mary Buttolph, widow, was granted adm of estate on 6 Aug 1717 (Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed., Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records, 3 vols. [Hartford, 1904-1906], 1:366-67 [FHL #974.6 P2m]).
MAR #3: "Windsor Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1637-1850," Barbour Collection (typescript, 1929; Conn. State Library, Hartford), 259 (FHL #002983). Intentions were recorded in Springfield Vital Records, 1:161, 24 Jan 1725/6 (FHL #185414). Hannah Phelps was possibly a widow, maiden name "Hanchet." See Israel P. Warren, The Stanley Families of America (Portland, Me., 1887), 28 (FHL #908714).
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of Benjamin Smith of Springfield, 14 May 1735, proved 9 May 1738, inv 23 May 1738, Hampshire Co. Probate, 6:9-10,19-20 (FHL #879185).

NOTE: Deed from Benjamin Smith of Westfield to John Reed, dated 5 Apr 1707 states that Benjamin was formerly of Farmington, Conn. and that he is a brother of Jonathan Smith and Jobanna Smith. This leaves no doubt as to the origin and identity of Benjamin Smith (Farmington Deeds, 3:217 [FHL #004216]).
