Mr. and Mrs. John Redlinger Family by Huldah [Hulda] Fischer, as told to Frances Storm
John Redlinger drew a homestead number and came to Dallas a few months before Tripp County opened up for settlement. Mr. Redlinger freighted with horses from Dallas to Lamro until the spring of 1909, then they moved onto their homestead nine miles northwest of Witten.
The Redlingers had been married several years before at Bridgewater, S.D., where Mrs. Redlinger's father, Crest [Christ] Auch, was a lay minister for 42 years. Mr. Redlinger came to the United States from Russia when he was 14 years old.
After 14 months on the homestead, they decided they liked the southern part of Tripp County better, so they bought a farm one mile south and one mile east of Clearfield. They lived there for many years, and here most of their 11 children were born. Mrs. Martin, a neighbor and midwife, assisted Mrs. Redlinger at these times. Once when a doctor was summoned, he didn't arrive until Esther was several hours old and Mrs. Martin had everything well in hand.
Mr. and Mrs. Redlinger expressed great joy in their children, and later their grandchildren. They do admit it was not all a bed of roses, for there were many difficulties and hardships.
During the depression years there were no crops, and eventually the Redlingers lost their farm. They bought another, but were finally forced by ill health to sell the farm business and retire. They spent their last years in Winner.
The Redlingers were faithful members of the Assembly of God Church.
Three of the Redlinger daughters are living in Winner. They are Hulda Fischer, Leah Nagel and Effie Evans. Several grandchildren also live here.
