I remember Dad telling they lived on what is now the Bill Younker farm east of Ackley, Iowa. His dad, Jacob Neymeyer, was a part-time schoolmaster and taught at what was known as the Schlaamp school, one mile east of Westfriesland Church.

They raised lots of hogs and would drive the hogs down the road to the Ackley stockyard and ship the hogs to Chicago by train.

Dad worked for Mr. Leader Siemers, Mrs. Joe Fisher's dad, when he was a teenage boy and also for Wm. Brass whose place is still there, also known as Island Grove. It had hundreds of oak trees and people would buy a big oak tree for 5 dollars for the winter because oak wood would burn all night in a heating stove.

When he was a young man he hired out to a Mr. Harry Ulfers, who bought 10 sections of land in North Dakota, to run a big Rumley tractor that pulled an eight bottom plow. Mr. Ulfers planted thousands of acres of wheat and Dad worked for him for one year. After that he operated the City Light Plant for Ackley. (It was run by steam and would use a train car of coal every two weeks.) He and a helper would work twelve hour shifts. He also worked for Bunte Motors, a Ford dealer in Ackley. He also worked for Peter Limburg in Austinville. His job was to assemble Ford cars (Model T). They were shipped in train boxcars (body & wheels and frame separate) and had to be put together. For many people this was their first car and even Dad would go out and give driving lessons. He used to tell about John Kromminga, how after a week of learning to drive, he drove it in the garage and when he wanted to stop the car he said, "Whoa, whoa" but the Ford kept right on going. He hit the front of the garage, but only broke the headlights.

After a few years Dad married Lizzie Harken, a daughter of Enno. K. Harken, and began farming on his father-in-law's farm, 7 miles north of Wellsburg. He was the first farmer to have a tractor (a Fordson). Of course, this tractor was from Bunte of Ackley. We had a lot of wet places in the farm, so Dad ordered another set of rear wheels and during the winter spent his spare time drilling holes in the edge of both sets of rims and bolted the extra rims to the ones on the tractor. Today duals on tractors are taken for granted, but Dad had the idea 75 years ago.

We moved to our present farm about two miles southwest of Austinville in 1938 and in 1940 Dad started a limestone quarry that is still being worked. John retired from farming in 1947 and moved to Ackley, Iowa and his oldest son Lester, married Stella Eekhoff, and moved into the home place, and Les and his brother Wayne took over the farm and operated the lime quarry.

My memories of my father was that church was an important part of his life. I believe he taught all of our family in Sunday School and was an Elder for years in the Westfriesland Church.

He loved the Old West and travel through Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico and to visit Irene and me in California, driving every mile himself. We always went to see Uncle Harm and family in South Dakota.

At one time he was going out West to buy sheep and would have them shipped by rail to Austinville. He would herd them down the sides of Highway 20 to the farm.
