BIOGRAPHY: Memories from Ruth: How We Met: In July 1940, I went to North Dakota to do housework at several places, still making 50 cents a day. In October 1940, I went to work for Andrew and Gen Braaten at Barney, ND for $4 per week. It was there that I really learned to bake bread - 12 loaves at a time. My brother, Harold, was working for Braaten's also at that time and he introduced me to Alvin at Zion Lutheran Church near Gwinner where Ruth Bergemann was attending. We had our first date September 1, 1940. We went to a movie at the Milnor Theater with Harold and Ruth. Alvin had a 1939 pickup for which he paid $615 new.

BIOGRAPHY: Alvin's Youth: Alvin went to school with a horse and buggy. One time Alvin set a trap under their schoolhouse and caught a skunk. Pete Schutt had to come and drag it to the field to shoot it. Alvin had a threshing machine and corn sheller. He would do custom work and he continued to do that after we started farming. He also did extensive trapping.

BIOGRAPHY: Our Wedding: We were married on my 22nd birthday. I went back to SD on the train a week or two before our wedding and Alvin came later and brought Estalla Yagow from Alexandria, MN and Harold and Ruth Bergemann the day before the wedding. They stayed at my parents. We got married in the parsonage in Olivet with just us and the attendants present. A reception was held at my parent's home. I made the cake. We stayed overnight at my parents'. Harold bought a car there and they went back to ND on Sunday. We went back to ND on Monday and took Estella home.

BIOGRAPHY: The Beginning of our Life Together: For the first two years of our marriage, we lived with Alvin's parents. We moved when Merlyn was nine months old. We bought our farm (2 quarters) October of 1943 for $12.50 an acre. A few years later, we boutgh two more quarters for $18 an acre. Alvin did lots of building on our farm. HE added extensively on to the house and also added other building. When we moved there, the house only had two rooms downstairs and two rooms upstairs. We had a coal and wood heating stove and two cribs in our bedroom besides our bed. We built on a bedroom in 1948 and later added a porch. In 1952, we built on a kitchen, bath, entry, two more bedrooms upstairs and another room in the basement. It took two years to get it finished as Alvin did it mostly by himself and I did all the interior wood finishing.

BIOGRAPHY: Our Retirement: Alvin and I have gone on many trips. We have been to the 48 states in the continental U.S. We have enjoyed traveling very much. A couple highlights of our travels are that we went fishing on the Pacific Ocean and that we got to shake hands with former President Jimmy Carter while attending a service at his church in Plains, Georgia.

The funeral for Ruth M. Yagow, of Lisbon, North Dakota, formerly of Milnor, North Dakota will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 10:00 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gwinner, North Dakota, with Reverend Kirk Douglas officiating. Visitation will be on Friday at the church from 5 to 7 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, near Gwinner.

Ruth M. Asche, daughter of Fred and Anna (Haase) Asche was born on April 25, 1919 at Scotland, South Dakota. She was baptized on August 3, 1919 at the Ebenezer Reformed Church at Scotland. As a young lady, Ruth moved to the Milnor, North Dakota area, where she worked as a housekeeper. She was united in marriage to Alvin Yagow on April 25, 1941 at Olivet, South Dakota. The couple lived and farmed in the Milnor and Gwinner, North Dakota area for 54 years. Ruth and Alvin retired in 1990, and moved into Milnor in 1997. Alvin died on March 24, 1998. Ruth continued to live in Milnor until moving to Prospect Manor Assisted Living Center in 2004. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Gwinner and charter member of the LWML. Ruth enjoyed cooking, baking, and visiting. She and Alvin also enjoyed traveling, as they visited every mainland state of the U.S. Most of all, Ruth will be remembered for being a dedicated mother and grandmother, as family was the most important thing in Ruth's life.

Ruth died on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at the Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon, North Dakota; she had entered the home on Monday. She was 87 years old.

She is survived by two sons, Morris, Fargo, and Myron (Lori), Milnor, ND; two daughters, Marlys (Robert) Gregory, Dayton, OH, and Maxine (Steve) Rust, Casselton, ND; two brothers, Dale (Martha) Asche, Gwinner, ND, and Raymond Asche, Milnor, ND; two sisters, Edna Buskol, Milnor, ND, and Arlene (Donald) Wohlwend, Camano Island, WA; one daughter-in-law, DeLores (Clair) McBeth, Fergus Falls, MN; two sisters-in-law, Donna (Vincent) Olson, and Ruth Asche, all of Gwinner, ND; nine grandchildren, Kevin (Cindy) Yagow, Milnor, ND, Kendall (Stacey) Yagow, Norfolk, NE, Jason Yagow, Denver, CO, Andrea (Steve) Hogness, Milnor, ND, Justin Yagow, Fargo, ND, Darick (Mary) Yagow, Milnor, ND, Brandon Yagow, Milnor, ND, and Elliot and Ryan Rust, Casselton, ND; and five great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Merlyn, her parents, and three brothers, Francis, Harold, and Arnold.

Burial: Zion Lutheran Cemetery Gwinner Sargent County North Dakota, USA
