"... Johann Rudolph Tholen (my great grandfather) immigrated to the US and settled in Golden, Illinois. He was a carpenter, like his father. He married the daughter of another earlier immigrant from Riepe, Heinrich Harm Franzen, who was oneof the original pioneer settlers in Golden. Johann changed his name when he got to the US and used a more "American name" of John Henry Tholen. In the 1920's he and his wife and many other members of their family moved to southernCalifornia and stayed there the rest of their lives. John and Anna Tholen were my mother's grandparents.

You stated near the end of your message that you would be interested in finding out about the descendants of Claas Albert Tholen. Do you mean John Henry Tholen's son, Claas? I'm presuming you do. Here's the information:

John Henry (Johann Rudolph) Tholen and Anna Margaret (nee Franzen) had 4 children: Wimda M., Margaret A., Claas Albert and Francis Harm. ... Note: Charles Dale Tholen, 79, pioneer in stop-motion special effects for films and television commercials. Born in Golden, Ill., Tholen served in the Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II. In the 1940s, he worked for GeorgePal Productions, making models and designing special effects for such films as "Tubby the Tuba" and Oscar-winning "Destination Moon." In 1952, Tholen became a partner in Swift-Chaplin Productions, one of the first companies organizedsolely to create television commercials. Tholen designed and made scale models, sets and camera equipment necessary to bring mascot characters to life in complicated stop-motion effects. Among the memorable commercials he helped createwere the Jolly Green Giant, Kellogg's Tony the Tiger and Speedy Alka-Seltzer. Tholen's avocation was designing cars and tools for amateur auto racing. On July 25 in Culver City of complications after a heart attack.
