2nd inquiry w/addt'l info: my great grandfather, Johann Tholen 1869-1933, carpenter, son of Claas Alberts Tholen; he immigrated to the US with his brother Eibe in 1883 and married Anna Franzen in Illinois and her family Heinrich HarmsFranzen were also from Riepe but had immigrated earlier. Do you have any information about either of them. I am told that the Lutheran Church in Riepe is the family home church of the Tholen family. I plan to visit Riepe sometime in the future and would love to connect with any family members or historians to learn more about my ancestors. Thank you."

Johann Rudolph Tholen (my great grandfather) immigrated to the US and settled in Golden, Illinois. He was a carpenter, like his father. He married the daughter of another earlier immigrant from Riepe, Heinrich Harm Franzen, who was one of the original pioneer settlers in Golden. Johann changed his name when he got to the US and used a more "American name" of John Henry Tholen. In the 1920's he and his wife and many other members of their family moved to southern California and stayed there the rest of their lives. John and Anna Tholen were my mother's grandparents.

You stated near the end of your message that you would be interested in finding out about the descendants of Claas Albert Tholen. Do you mean John Henry Tholen's son, Claas? I'm presuming you do. Here's the information:

John Henry (Johann Rudolph) Tholen and Anna Margaret (nee Franzen) had 4 children: Wimda M., Margaret A., Claas Albert and Francis Harm. Wimda married Guy Stamets, but they didn't have any children. Margaret married Harry John Wible. Margaret and Harry had two children: Geraldine and Lurella Jean. Geraldine and Jean are both still living. Claas Albert Tholen married Verna Emma Poling; and they had 5 children: Charles Dale, Daphne Claire, Roberta Anne, Bonnie June and Lee Verne. Charles "Dale" married Betty Williams and they had 2 daughters, Lisa and Kerry, both of which are still living as is their mother Betty. Daphne Claire (my mother) married William Kenneth Frew; and they had 3 daughters: Phyllis Ann, Suzanne Elaine, and me - Claudia Louise. Daphne is still living but Ken passed on about 16 years ago. Roberta Anne married Robert Hughes; and they had 2 children; Scott and Marianne. Both Roberta and Robert passed on several years ago. Their children are still living. Bonnie June married Jack Freckleton; they adopted a son, Bradley. Bonnie passed away about 1973 and Brad is still living. Lee Verne married John Paul (JP) Snodgrass; they adopted a daughter, Lindsay and then had a child of their own, Darin. Lee Verne and JP and their children are still living.

Both of my grandparents, Claas Albert and Verna Poling were born and raised in Golden, Illinois and they moved to California with John Henry and Anna Franzen and several other members of the family and settled in the area of Ontario andthen subsequently, Long Beach and Culver City. My siblings and cousins were all born and raised in southern California from the San Fernando Valley to San Diego. Most of them still live there. My mother and I live in southern Oregonand have lived here for about 30-40 years since I was a young woman.

I have been able to connect with other distant relatives in Golden, Illinois and they have been most helpful. In fact, I'm taking my mother there next month to visit her parents' hometown. Her grandmother's house is still standing, asis the old Dutch Windmill built by the early settlers to grind flour and my ggggrndfather helped to build it! I have also contacted many people in Germany. They have also been most helpful by putting me in touch with historians andgenealogists from Riepe. The church that our ancestors worshipped in which was built in 1554 is also still standing and I plan to visit the town and the church, etc., when I travel to Europe in a few years. I also have informationregarding Claas Albert Tholen and Wimda Marie Oppellands' other children (siblings of Johann Rudolph (John Henry)) and their descendants if you're interested. I've even been in contact with them. They live in Freudenberg, Germany downby Heidelburg.
