Remsen Pioneer Claimed By Death.

Peter Tjaden, 85, prominent early day settler of Remsen, died Tuesday at his home in Remsen after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at St. Paul's Evangelical church in Remsen.

He is survived by his children, Mrs. Chris Jessen of Denver, Henry Tjaden and Mrs. Dell Aden of Twin Brooks, S. D., Hans Tjaden of Breda, Mrs. Lena Reinholdt and George Tjaden of Remsen Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Aug. 12, 1938, page 1.

Prominent Early-day Settler Dies Tuesday at Age of 85 Years.

Death again broke into the ranks of pioneers of Plymouth county when Peter Tjaden, resident here for 56 years, fell into his final sleep at his home on North Main street Tuesday afternoon, leaving a heartbroken widow, six children and an array of good old friends to mourn his loss at the age of 85 years. Infirmities were given as the cause of his death, which had been expected almost momentarily for the last 10 days.

Funeral services were held this afternoon in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church.

His numerous friends about town began three years ago to miss Mr. Tjaden's daily visits. Up to that time he enjoyed perfect health throughout his long life, although infirmities began to tell and gradually his strength left him. It was three years ago that Mr. Tjaden made his last daily visit uptown, to spend his remaining days in the quiet and comfort of his home.

Ten days ago he was obliged to confine himself to the bed from which he failed to again arise, and the family was prepared to meet the final verdict. He passed away at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with his faithful wife, his daughter, Mrs. Lena Reinholdt, and his son George at his bedside.

Born January 23, 1853 in the village of Tergast, Ostfriesland, Germany, the deceased was a son of Eilert and Tieska Tjaden who passed away in their native home.

Following the farming occupation, Mr. Tjaden remained at home until he attained young manhood and there was united in marriage, September 13, 1881, to Hilka Raveling. The couple came to this country in the following year, 1882, in company with a family group consisting of their firstborn, a daughter, Tieska, and with Mrs. Tjaden's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Raveling and their son, Tjebbe. They came directly to Remsen, settling in Meadow township northeast of town, where they bought land. Mr. Tjaden immediately selected a choice quarter section six miles north of here, which the family occupied for 29 years.

Overcoming all the struggles encountered by the pioneer and laboring diligently at their task while helping in the upbuilding of the virgin territory and taking part staunchly in every civic problem of the community, Mr. and Mrs. Tjaden saw and took a prominent part of the transformation which put this part of Plymouth county in the foremost ranks of agricultural and community development. They occupied their splendid farm for 29 years and in 1911 began to take their reward in the form of rest and comfort in a commodious home in town where they continued to mingle with their early day associates and to enjoy their place in the ranks of deserving and respected members of a delightful community.

Celebration of their silver wedding anniversary in 1906 was an event memories of which both Mr. and Mrs. Tjaden and their children retained freshly unto this day. It was an occasion outstanding in the social annals of the neighborhood on the farm, which hundreds of neighbors and townsmen paying their respects and showing their appreciation of this esteemable couple. A death in the family precluded all social show on their gold wedding day seven years ago.

Peter Tjaden was one of those sound, substantial pioneers who are an asset to any community. His coming to Remsen 56 years ago is to be regarded as a community benefit if loyal and upright citizenship are to be given their due. No blemishing mark ever found its way against the name of Peter Tjaden and those who "rubbed elbows" with him through the struggles of pioneer days will testify that here was one the like of whom were the very fertility of the soil which made this one of the outstanding agricultural districts in the garden spot of Iowa. Honesty, diligence, thrift and devotedness to God, country and home were among his characteristics and the community at large lost a good member when Peter Tjaden went to his reward. His friends and all friends of the esteemable family offer sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the stricken ones.

Mr. and Mrs. Tjaden were the parents of 10 children. Four of them preceded their father in death. In 1885 they suffered the loss of a son, three years old, and a daughter one year old. In 1890, a son Eildert, 18 years old, passed away and in 1930 death claimed a daughter, Mrs. (Sievie) Charles Kast, at Brush, Color.

The living children are: Tieska, now Mrs. Chris. Jessen of Denver; Henry and Hilka, now Mrs. Del Aden of Twin Brooks, S.D.; Hans of Breda, Iowa, and Mrs. Lena Reinholdt and George, of Remsen.

Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at the family home at 2 o'clock and later in St. Paul's church of which congregation Mr. Tjaden had been a charter member and a life-long supporter, and the large attendance at the last rites was a worthy testimonial of the high esteem in which he was held. Pallbearers were six nephews - John, Eildert, Jacob and Peter Tjaden, Joseph Fritz and P. Anderson.
