Note: Barbara came to this country with her parents as an infant. The family settled in a log cabin near Little Rock, Arkansas .At the early age of seven she lost her father, and the mother with her five children moved to Dubuque, Iowa. Herformal education was received in the Dubuque public school , after which she worked in a book binding and printing office. This establishment printed religious books and articles. Here, through her great love of learning, she was able toacquire an excellent knowledge of theology and literature. She married Fred Waalkes who was a Presbyterian minister. Together they worked in pastorates in Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota. During the five years in which her husband was a traveling home missionary for the Synod ofthe West, she had the greater responsibility in rearing five children. Her home was always open to the many young ministerial students who received counsel and lodging there during the summer months.
