Oru loving heavenly Father in His inscrutable wisdom and never-failing providence, has deemed it wise to remove from this earthly pilgrimage Mrs. John Harringa, nee Metta Uken. She was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, on September 24,1861. In that country she completer her education and at the age of 21 years she, with her parents left Germany for America and arrived at Ackley, Grundy County, Iowa, in the year 1882.
In the 1884 she was united in marriage to John Harringa and nine years later, in the year 1893, the young couple moved to Kossuth County, settling on the farm on which she continued to reside until the day of her departure - a period of51 years.
The mariage union was blessed with twelve children of which number nine remain to mourn her departure. She was preceded in death by the following children: Annie, who passed away in the influenza epidemic of the first world war; Henry,who died in the army during World War I; and Benjamin, who passed away in infancy.
On October 17, 1912, her husband, John Harringa, passed away. For many years Mrs. Harringa bravely directed the farm work and carried on with trust in her Lord, and never found Him to fail. Since 1924 she has made her home with her sonand daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. John Harringa Jr., though still on the same farm to which she came in 1893. In the course of those twenty years she became deeply attached to that family and they to her, and spared no sacrifice to makeher comfortable in her advanced age.
In the year 1894 she united with the Ramsey Reformed Church and continued faithful, by the grace of God, throughout those fifty years. A number of years ago one who knew her well made the following statement about her devotion to thechurch: "Only illness or bad weather can keep her from church services." From our frequent contacts with her in her home we have been made aware of her active interests in the church.
In the last years, because of her greatly advanced age, she failed gradually and became constantly weaker in bodyk but stronger in faith. since last fall, her health failed rapidly and she became bed-ridden in the middle part of January.Although prefessional aid was frequently summoned and loved ones did all that love prompted them to do, she became continually weaker and she longed only for that rest that knows no end. She passed away very quietly and peacefully onSaturday morning, March 11, 1944, at 1 o'clock, having reached the age of 82 years, 5 months and 17 days.
She leaves to mourn her departure the following children: Harm of Titonka, Herman of Hayfield, Edward of Castlewood, S. D., Andrew of Buffalo Center, Emalena (Mrs. Geo. Helmers) of Buffalo Center, Ettie (Mrs. Matthem Geerdes) ofWhittemore, John of Titonka and Reiner of Buffalo Center; Forty-seven grandchildren, of these, five grandsons in the army at present; and ten great-grandchildren; also three sisters-in-law, Anna Neymeyer of Applington, Iowa; CarrieMcDougle of Briton, Minn., and Etta Uken of Titonka. Beside the above mentioned loved ones she leaves a host of other relatives and friends.
A hym which was dear to her heart as an expression of her faith was the German hymn, "So Nimm den meind Hande," which, translated, reads:
Take Thou myhands and lead me o'er life's rough way; With heavenly manna feed me from day to day. Alone, I'm ever straying from life away; With Thee beside me staying I'm safe alway.
Take me, O Lord, and hide me in folds of grace. That I, whate'er betide me may see Thy face; Draw me in Thy good pleasure near unto Thee And grant me faith's full measure, Tho' naught I see.
Full oft it seems Thou hidest Thy wondrous night; Yet to the goal Thou guidest tho' dark the night. then take my hands and lead me till life is o'er;" <>
