Note: Funeral services were held Thursday March 19, 1998 at 10:30 at the Zoar Presbyterian Church of George, IA for Martha Ackerman, 90, of Sibley, IA. Dr David Ullom officiated with Ruth Ackerman as organist. Casketbearers were Kelly Ackerman,Leo Ackerman, Jim Ahrendsen, Charles Ackerman, Cory Ackerman and Lowell Ackerman with internment in the Zoar Presbyterian Cemetery of George, IA.
Martha Dorthea Ackerman was born on January 16, 1908 near George, IA the daughter of August and Louisa (Reinke) Vaupel. Martha was raised on the family farm near George and attended country school. in 1926 she married Thomas O Ackermanand they began farming SW of Sibley. To this union 4 sons and 11 daughter were born. Martha and Thomas were later divorced in 1936.
Martha began working for Priebe and Son's Egg and Poultry in Sibley. She worked for Priebe's for a number of years before taking a position with the USDA as a meat inspector. At that time she began traveling to processing plants invarious communities inspecting meat products. Martha retired in 1976 at the age of 68. She was an active member of Zoar Presbyterian Chruch of George, continuing her membership even after moving to Sibley in the 1950's. In her youngeryears Martha appreciated history and liked to read, so it wasn't unusual to find her in the middle of a book dealing with a subject from the past. In her private time she would do crocheting and made many beautiful quilts. Martha hadbecome a resident of Country View Manor in Sibley and this last Monday morning she died at the Osceola Community Hospital at the age of 90. Since Martha was a single parent it was no surprise to those who knew her that her children wereher highest prioroty. Her family will remember Martha for her loving care and her unfailing desire to provide and look out for them.
Surviving are her 4 sons; kenneth (Margaret) Ackerman of Sibley; Glenn Ackerman of Sacramento, CA; Cecil (Shirley) Ackerman of Ashton; and Dale (Jean) Ackerman of Worthington; 1 daughter Cleo (Jacob) Ahrendsen of LeMars, IA; along withher 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.
Martha was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Arlene Ackerman; grandson Mark Ackerman; 2 infant great grandchildren Jeremy and Desiree Ackerman; her parents; 7 sisters Lousie Feldman, Ruth Vaupel, Elsie Vaupel, Esther Vaupel, MinnieHeidebrink, Emma Trei and Anne Brandt and 6 brothers Bill, Edwin, Clarence, Fred, Ben, and August Vaupel.
