"HEIKO AND GRACE MEYERING By Ruth Edwards

Heiko made the journey across the Atlantic Ocean to America from Bellingvolde, Holland when he was four years old in 1914, with his parents, John and Everdena (Raatjes) Meyering and his brothers, Tony, Ben, John and Henry, and sister,Trena. They joined Heiko's older brother, Jerry, and sister, Minnie, who settled in Kamrar, Iowa in 1913. The tickets they used to cross the ocean were compliments of a farmer who was impressed with the work that Jerry did tiling forhim.

The Meyering family rented 120 acres to start farming as well as tiled others' land. In 1918, they rented a total of 360 acres near Buffalo Center. The field work was done with horse-drawn machinery. they milded 12 to 13 cows by handand raised hogs, cattle, sheep, and chickens. In 1926, they moved to a 300-acre farm owned by J. J. Guyer and three other people, and rented another 160 acres. John passed away in 1938 and Everdena in 1940.

John and Minnie Abels and their son, John came to America in 1913. They had three more children: Joseph Edward, and Jenny.

In 1922. Ben married Kathryn Abels, John Abels' sister. After farming near lakota, they farmed near Bricelyn, then near Webster City, Iowa. They had two daughters, Beatrice and Irene.

Jerry, who married Henrietta Jannsen, also farmed near Buffalo Center. He first moved to Blairsburg and then to Williams, Iowa. They had three daughters, Eveline, Pauline, and Dena Marie.

Tony, who farmed near Buffalo Center with his wife Annie (Brass), had six children: Fred, Everdena, Annie, Fannie, Johnie, and Richard.

Trena married Albert Boltjes and had one child named Johnnie. Later she married Carl Skilbred and had two children, Karen and Lawrence. Johnnie married Jeriena Jensen and they had five children: Henrietta, Johnnie, Ronnie, Theresa, andLaurie. They currently live in Elmore, Minnesota. Karen married Dean Pickerell and they have twin sons, Carl and Brian; they reside in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Lawrence married Patricia Coy of Elmore and they have three children: Brett,Scott, and Brooke; they live in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Henry and John never married.

So much for Heiko's background. What about the young lady he married, Grace Wessels?"

"Grace's grandparents, John and Gretje (Prenger) Wessels, immigrated to America from Bellingvolde, Holland, which is near the German border. They had five children: Avert, John, Henry (who died in the flu epidemic), Jennie, and Carl.

In 1913, Avert married Bena Burma who waws born in Figgelwark, East Friesland, Germany; Heiko's bride-to-be, Grace wass born in 1914, followed by two siblings, Pearl and Johnnie, However, Bena, who was pregnant with the fourth child, diedin the 1919 flu epidemic. After Avert remarried, the three children were raised by different families. Grace was raised by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wessels. , Sr.; Pearl by her aunt, Peter and Kate DeGroat; and Johnnie by hisuncle, John Wessels. Pearl, a retired telephone operator, lives in Mason City, Iowa. Johnnie, a retired telephone serviceman, lives in Bricelyn, Minnesota.

While Pearl and Carl never married, Grace married Heiko in the First Reformed Church of Buffalo Center on February 17, 1937. Farming was their main interest. They had seven children: James, Jeriene, Russell, Leroy, Henry, Marsha, andElaine. After they farmed 240 acres west of Rake, Iowa, they purchased and moved to a 160-acre farm north of Woden, Iowa. Next they farmed 240 acres south of Rake. After they sold this farm, they bought 360 acres northeast of Woden.They added another 80 acres, before they retired and moved to Buffalo Center ih 1972.

James married Karen Weum from Albert Lea, Minnesota, and is farming northeast of Woden. They have five children: Julie (Rollefson), Lorene (Kesslar), Paul, Bonnie, and Holly; and three grandsons, Christopher and Scott Rollefson and DavidKesslar.

Jeriene married Gary Sleper from Titonka, Iowa. She is an elementary principal at both Titonka and Buffalo Center while Gary owns and operates th Standard Oil business in Titonka wth brance stations in Buffalo Center and Bancroft, Iowa.Their daughter, Jeri Ann, married Jom Taylor; they have one son, Jared.

Russell, who married Thelma Stohr of Woden, is farming one mile north of his brother, James. They have two daughters, Sheila and Angela.

Leroy married Ruth Wellik of Woden and they have four children: Chad, Sara, Kari, and Ryan. They live in Bloomington, Minnesota. Leroy is vice president of operations and chief financial officer of a Twin Cities company while Ruth is aregistered nurse.

Henry, who married Julie Stoddard of Titonka, has four children: Michael, Melanie, Justin, and Kathryn. He farms one mile east of his brother, Russell.

Marsha married Daniel Saybolt of New York City, New York. They live in Miami, Florida, where Dan owns a steel exporting business and Marsha is a partner in a glamour photography business.

Elaine married Dale Prince of Lakota where they farm with their three children: Brandon, Joel, and Rachel.

Heiko and Grace's entertainment in their early married days consisted of playing cards, atttending house parties and barn dances where Heiko played the accordion. With the number of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, thereis never a dull moment in their household. Both enjoy golfing, bowling, fishing, traveling, and are actively involved in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Grace makes many quilts for her"

"grandchildren as well as for the missions. Heiko owns the Buffalo Center Recreation Hall.

While they have traveled to Hawaii, Holland three times, Europe, and have taken a Caribbean Cruise, they thoroughly enjoy entertaining kinfolk who visit from Holland. Althey they take their relatives to various parts of the UnitedStates, they always visit LeRoy Weaver's shoe store.

A special happy event in Heiko and Grace's life was the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. It was held in February 1987 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center."
