Alanson Townsend was born in the South East township now known as the town of Pawling, Dutchess Co. NY, born Feb. 11, 1788 (I have March); died Sept. 9, 1882 (I have Oct.) in the town of Schroeppel, Oswego Co. NY aged 94 yrs, 6 mo. 28 days at the home of his son, William R. Townsend.
At the age of 5 years he moved with his parents to the town of Litchfield, Herkimer Co. NY where he lived many years favorably and honorably known holding several responsible offices.
He was married 1817 to Mary Parker, daughter of Rev. Archibald Parker of Litchfield, NY. Four children born to this union; two living: William R., Schroeppel, NY; and Henry, Litchfield, NY, living on the old homestead.
Eighteen years after his wife's death, he removed to the town of Schroeppell with his daughter, Maria, since deceased, and his son William R. and settled on what was then known as the McKoon farm.
He was characterized through life by his sterling integrity and firm adherence to principles of right action whatever might have been the ruling spirit of the times. He was possessed of a fine intellect and a remarkable memory which resisted the approach of age and up to nearly the time of his death he was able to repeat verbatim many of the speeches and writings of the great men of his day, but he has passed to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns, leaving behind him the record of a long and well spent life.
The best tribute that can be paid to his memory is rendered by the esteem and respect with which he will long be remembered by those who knew him.
I also found online at Ancestry that he was in the War of 1812 - 27 Reg't (Shoemaker's) New York Mil. rank of private.
Thought you might like to add this to your piles of stuff.
