<br>LifeSketch: Born during The First English Civil War, Henrietta was the youngest and last child of King Charles I and his wife, Queen Henrietta Maria. Her brother, Charles nicknamed her Minette.born on 16 June 1644, on the eve of the Second Battle of Newbury, at Bedford House in Exeter, a seat of William Russell, Earl of Bedford. As the Parliamentary forces led by Lord Essex were yet again threatening the west, on 14 July the Queen fled to France leaving her sickly infant daughter to be cared for by her governess, Anne Villiers, Lady Dalkeith: it is possible her mother thought the baby would not survive the journey. As per her father's wishes, Henrietta was baptised in accordance with the rites of the Church of England at Exeter Cathedral on 21 July 1644. ing in Exeter to take on Essex, saw his new baby daughter for the first and only time on 26 July 1644. The King then marched to Cornwall and defeated the Parliamentary forces of Essex at Lostwithiel. Whilst the war ebbed and flowed, Henrietta was moved to the safety of Oatlands Palace in Surrey where she and her household lived for some three months before fleeing secretly to France in June 1646. e. However, with the restoration of the Stuart dynasty in 1660, Henrietta Anne was suddenly a "good match" and at age 17, she married her first cousin, Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, who was the younger son of her maternal uncle Louis XIII and the only brother of King Louis XIV. The wedding was held at the Palais Royal chapel in Paris on 31 March 1661 and Henrietta Anne became Duchess of Orléans but she and her husband were known at court simply as Monsieur and Madame. It wasn't a happy marriage. The bisexual Duke only feigned interest in Henrietta but he did have five children with her. Henrietta, in turn, ignored him and had a brief affair with the King and then formed a liaison with Guy Armand de Gramont, Comte de Guiche, one of the greatest playboys of the 17th century. e only one of her children that Queen Henrietta Maria was able to completely mold, including her conversion to the Catholic religion. She was the most popular member of the Stuart family and she demonstrated a natural grace allowing her to adapt to any kind of company. She endeared herself to everyone she met, being sweet-natured and open-hearted. She had the rare quality of charming both men and women, with the capacity to both give and receive love.
