Notes for IRIN # 68, Oscar Ferd. (Fredrik) Gustav? Holm
Carrie and Oscar knew each other as children, as their parents both came, apparently together, as newlyweds immigrating from Sweden to the US. The Holm parents and Anderson parents remained close after they
settled in the Vasa, MN, area.
Name in Vasa was "HOLM." Name in Minneapolis was called "HOLMES."
Dad (Robert Holm Pilcher) recalls visiting Vasa with the family and staying at Oscar's house with no plumbing or heat. He went out to get eggs in the morning and recalls dropping one in the house. [Funny the little incidents that stick with us./CP] Heating was by stove in the kitchen and front room, and flatirons were heated in the fire to put into the foot of the beds to warm them up.
The church in Vasa is across the street from the Holm/Anderson lots, and the Holm house is allegedly still there (abt 1980). The churchhas a large pulpit and oak Bible support, all handcarved.
Much of this information on Oscar and Carrie and their parents and children was supplied by Merle E. Johnson and provided through a letter from Marion Kuch Johnson, Christmas, 1994, to Bob Pilcher in Juneau, AK.
Norma received a "Christmas Greetings/Happy Yuletide Greetings" postcard from "Granpa and Granma Holm" in [1920?/postmark not clear].
The 1930 Census shows Oscar F. Holm living with daughter Ellen Pehrson, age 51, and her husband Nels in the 10th Ward, Hennepin County, MN. Since both of Ellen's parents and both of Oscar's parents were listed as born in Sweden, this would make Lily "Etta" Holm 100% Swedish.
2 Feb 1931 letter from Tillie to Norma: "...Does Grandpa go and see you often. I am sure he will help you as much as he is able to. Of course he is getting old and can't get around very rapidly. But I do know he is honest and would not do any one out of a dollar if he knew it..."
Death Certificate says he was in US only 16 years at time of death. Not likely. Died of "chronic myocarditis" for 6 months with apoplexy contributing for 5 weeks. Informant was Mrs. Nels Pehrsson of 3227 Oliver Ave. N., Minneapolis. Wonder who lived at the Pleasant Avenue address. Oscar is said to have been living with Ellen at the time of his death. That is why she is the informant?
Dad remembers driving to the funeral in the winter. He guessed it was about 1939-40 (but was wrong). Stan Oram drove the car. It was snowy. The service was in a church on a hill with a long drive up, and the church on the left of the drive, and the town and a creamery down the hill on the right. He recalls it as a beautiful setting at
the time.
Discussion with Dad, 1994:
Oscar Holm left $250 to Dad (Robert Holm Pilcher) and each of Lily Etta's kids in his will. Dad got the money about 1945 and bought 10 shares of US Steel stock through Merrill Lynch in Seattle. With this first investment in the stock market, that account has grown to a significant amount today. The will is somewhere in the family.
19 Apr 1932 letter from Tillie to Norma: "...I am glad there will be something for you all after Grandpa. It will help some... I was sure father had a great deal more. When I was back there Anna Mehrkens told me his estate was valued at $12,000... I am sure father meant well by all. He was a good hearted man so of course would help most
anyone who asked it..."
