Served as Assistant Surgeon with the Blackhawk Rifles, Company G,Twenty Secondand Mississippi Regiment, Featherstone's Brigade, Loring Division, Polk's Corps, Army of Tennessee. The campaigns of this Brigade included battles against Grant's Army in northern Mississippi, Greenwood,Vicksburg, Canton and Jackson. Following this campaign, theTwenty Second was ordered to Georgia where they fought portions of Sherman's Armyalmost daily at places like Resaca, New Hope, Atlanta,Lovejoy Stationand Jonesboro.
He enlisted September 27, 1861 at Union City Tennessee by CaptainH.J. Reid, commander of the Blackhawk Rifles. He was commissionedOctober 29, 1862 at Greensboro, North Carolina and paroled in accordancewith the terms of the Military Convention April 26, 1865. He opened hispractice in Blackhawk very soon after.

      Canton, (Miss.,)3 Oct 27th 1863

      Sir;

      I respectfully ask for leave of absence for twenty-eight days for the following reason4:
      My father having very recently died5, the condition of his private affairs, and the situation of his family, bereft of its head and protector, imperatively require my presence at home if it be in any way consistent with the interests of the service that I should be absent from my command.
      I am the eldest child, and my little brother6, fourteen years of age is the oldest male member of the family now at home. There is no relation residing near the family to act, nor do I know any one that would act, in my stead.
      The Surgeon of the Regiment is present, & the sick list is extremely small. I have never been absent without leave.
      It will require eight or ten days for me to perform the journey to and from my father’s residence (Wilcox County, Ala.)
      I have the honor to remain

      1. Benjamin Franklin Kittrell completed his studies at the New Orleans Medical School in 1861. The Black Hawk Rifles were organized in April, 1861, and Dr. Benjamin Franklin Kittrell joined them on Sept 27, 1861, at Union City, TN, and a “Buck” Kittrell also joined this unit during the war, but that date is not yet known. (Sketch of the Black Hawk Rifles by Col. H. J. Reid, p. 3 and 4.) Dr. Benjamin Franklin Kittrell was appointed Assistant Surgeon by the Senate of the Confederacy on 4 April 1863, according to his records at the National Archives, M331, Compiled Service Records of Confederate General and Staff Officers, and Nonregimental Enlisted Men, range Kinl-Kn. Dr. Benjamin is described as being 6 feet 1 inch tall with blue eyes and light hair and complesion in those records.

      2. Col. B. S. Ewell, A. A. Gen’l. was probably Benjamin S. Ewell, according to the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System available online at: <http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm> or National Archives film M818, roll 8.

      3. The Black Hawk Rifles, Company G, 22nd Mississippi Regiment, Featherston’s Brigade, Loring’s Division, Polk’s Corps, Army of Tennessee, was near Canton, MS, from September through December of 1863. Dr. Benjamin F. Kittrell served as Assistant Surgeon, and “Buck” Kittrell also served in that
      unit. (Military Annals of Carroll County, MS (Expanded) by W. F. Hamilton and Betty Wiltshire, Pioneer Publishing Company, 2004, p. 54, 55, 59 and 62.) “Buck” was probably Dr. Ben’s younger brother, William Patrick Kittrell, who served that unit as a Hospital Steward according to the Civil War Soldier’s and Sailors System. “Buck” was the usual Kittrell family nickname for those named William Patrick.

      4. Dr. Benjamin F. Kittrell was granted 20 of the 28 days leave he requested, according to his records in the National Archives, Roll M331, “Compiled Service Records of Confederate General and Staff Officers, and Nonregimental Enlisted Men.” Those records also included his letter requesting the leave.

      5. Dr. William Jones Kittrell, father of Dr. Benjamin Franklin Kittrell, was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina about 1813 and died about Oct. 1, 1863, according to a bill for funeral expenses dated Oct. 2, 1863 in his estate file. Thomas Jewett Goree, nephew of William Jones Kittrell, included an account of the death of his “Uncle William Kittrell” in a letter dated February 8, 1864, to his mother, Sarah Williams Kittrell Goree, as reported in an earlier letter from her niece and his cousin, Sarah “Sallie” Bryant Kittrell, the daughter of William Jones Kittrell:

      “You have doubtless before this, Mother, heard of the death of Uncle William Kittrell. He died about the 1st of October last. Cousin Sallie writes me that he was very sick nine weeks, and suffered very severely during his entire illness. He first had typhoid fever, which turned into galloping consumption. If I can lay my hands on it, I will enclose you Cousin Sallie’s letter.
      I was very very sorry to hear of Uncle William’s death. He leaves, no doubt, his family in very limited circumstances. I had hopes that some time during the war it would have been in my power to have made him a visit. The news of his death will be a severe blow to Grandma” [Mary Norman Kittrell ].       6. Bryant Jones Kittrell would have been the younger brother, age 14, who was at home with their mother, four sisters and youngest brother. The children of William Jones Kittrell and Elizabeth Martha Cain Kittrell were: Dr. Benjamin Franklin Kittrell (1837-1897), Sarah “Sallie” Bryant Kittrell West (1839-1880), Mary Norman Kittrell Craig (1842-1921), William Patrick “Buck” Kittrell (abt. 1845-1891), Charles Kittrell (abt. 1847-1858), Bryant Jones Kittrell (1849-1880), Laura Williams Kittrell Stone (abt. 1853-1939), Alice Harndon Kittrell Marshall (1857-1877) and Dr. Robert Norman Kittrell (1860-1900). Dr. Ben and William “Buck” Kittrell were in the Confederate Army, Charles Kittrell had died in 1858 and Robert Norman Kittrell was only 3 in October of 1863. (1850 U. S.
