Education: Graduated from high school in 1897 in Chester, SC. She graduated in a class of 9 and was valedictorian. ["Looking Back in the History of Chester," 9/7/50 issue of local newspaper]Attended Erskine College one year 1898-99, Bachelor's Degree from WC 1899Sallie, her daughter, said, "I believe that the reason Mother attended only one year and yet got the degree in 1899 was as follows. She attended and finished at a private school in Chester, SC, run by Mr. Bigham and that her credentials were such that she entered WC as a senior. In the WC yearbook the remark was that "Miss Alice Kitrell" was sorry that there were no grades higher than an "A" to aim for since that was already what she got all the time! Part of her graduation was a duo-piano recital.

Ashbel Green and Sallie (Sarah really but Aunt Sallie refused to bother or apparently to be bothered with her given name) Miller Brice. Teaching career:"In the 1929-30 depression when she needed to help out by going back to teaching she inquired of the Mr. Bigham for records and what she got was accepted at LRC (Lenior Rhyne College, Hickory, NC)as well as WC records, and applied on her renewal of teaching. Mr. Bigham died not so long after this and she was so thankful that she had already gotten the records."The Mr. Bigham had a daughter, Maude, whom Alice Kittrell taught. Maude, in turn taught Alice's oldest niece and nephew, the McAlileys [Mary Leigh and Charles C. McAliley of their family farm three miles from Chester near Old Purity in rural Chester County, South Carolina (and after the loss by fire of their farm home in 1923) of the town of Chester, South Carolina.
