Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, so created 16 March 1415/6, with the same remainder as his grandfather; born 3 Feb 1392/3, had his grandfather's estates restored to him and was knighted; on military service in Normandy 1416 and 1417, Warden of the East March 1417, Member of Council of Regency on death of Henry V, commissioner to negotiate peace with the Scots Fewb 1423/4 and 1452, Jt commissioner to monitor violations of truce with Scots 1433, Constable of England May-Sep 1450; married a short while after Oct 1414, as her 2nd husband, Lady Alianore/Eleanor Nevill(e), daughter of Ralph, 1st Earl of Westmorland of the 1397 creation, and was killed fighting on Henry VI's side at the Battle of St Albans against the Yorkists 22 May 1455. HENRY DE PERCY, grandson and heir, being son and heir of Sir Henry DEPERCY (Hotspur), by Elizabeth his wife, was born 3 February 1392/3, andtaken by his grandfather, shortly after the death of Hotspur, toScotland. Henry V, probably influenced by the young exile'smother-in-law, the Countess of Westmorland, aunt to the King, interestedhimself in his return. In February 1415/6 Lord Grey of Codnor and SirJohn Neville of Raby were commissioned to receive him from the Governorof Scotland, and bring him to the King's person. On 16 March 1415/6 hewas created in Parliament, with girding of the sword, sibi et heredibussuis, EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND; had a regrant of the entailed estates, andwas knighted by the King, to whom he was faithful throughout his life. Heserved in Normandy in 1416, and in the summer of 1417. In April 1417 hewas made Warden of the East March of Scotland. On the death of Henry V hewas one of the King's executors, and a member of the Council of Regency;commissioner to treat of peace with Scotland, February 1423/4, and toconduct James I [SCT], on his return to his kingdom, from Durham to theBorder, 28 March 1424; in August 1433 joint commissioner to treat ofbreaches of the truce. Together with the burgesses of Alnwick he hadlicence, June 1434, to inclose the town with a wall, and to fortify thewall. In July 1438 he was granted an annuity of £100 for life, forattendance at the Council. It was said in the Council in 1443 that thedisturbances in the North were attributable to letters written by theEarl (l). He was appointed Constable of England during pleasure, 25 May1450. A commissioner to treat with Scotland, June 1452.

He married, soon after October 1414, at Berwick, Eleanor, widow of Richard LE DESPENSER, styled LORD LE DESPENSER, son and heir apparent of Thomas, EARL OF GLOUCESTER, and daughter of Ralph (NEVILLE), EARL OFWESTMORLAND, by his 2nd wife, Joan BEAUFORT, sister of the half-blood toKing HENRY IV.[c] He was slain ex parte Regis at the 1st battle of St.Albans, 22 May 1455. (l) On 20 May he was ordered to render himself to the Tower of London, and the Constable to keep him in custody there. On the 25th he gave his bond (cancelled in July) to do no hurt to any, and to withdraw no more than 7 miles from London, save to his manor of Dagenham, Essex. He was absent from the Council only 21 to 28 May inclusive.

[c] By her he had 9 sons, of whom Thomas, the 3rd, was created LordEgremont his daughter Katherine married Edmund Grey, Earl of Kent.

Henry de Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland, who m. Lady Eleanor Nevil,dau. of Ralph, 1st Earl of Westmoreland, and Joan de Beaufort, dau. ofJohn of Gaunt, and aunt of King Henry V. Of this nobleman and hiscountess, and their issue, the following account is given in a verycurious MS preserved in the British Museum, and there said to beextracted Ex Registro Monasterij de Whitbye; -- "Henry Percy, the son ofSir Henry Percy that was slayne at Shrewsbury, and of Elizabeth, the dau.of the Erle of Marche, after the death of his father and graunsyre, wasexiled into Scotland, in the time of King Henry V; by the labour ofJohanne, the Countess of Westmerland (whose dau., Alianor, he had weddedin coming into England), he recovered the king's grace and the county ofNorthumberland, so was the 2nd Earl of Northumberland. And of this Alianor, his wife, he begat IX sonnes and III daughters, whose names beJohanne, that is buried at Whitbye; Thomas (created) Lord Egremont;Katheyne Grey, of Ruthyn (wife of Edmund, Lord Grey, afterwards Earl ofKent); Sir Raffe Percy; William Percy, a byshopp; Richard Percy; John,that dyed without issue; another John (called by Vincent, in his MSBaronage in the Heralds' office, John Percy, senior, of Warkworth);George Percy, clerk; Henry, that dyed without issue; besides the eldestsonne and successor, Henry, 3rd Erle of Northumberland." His lordship,who was at the battle of Agincourt, was made lord high constable by King Henry VI, and fell at St. Alban's, 23 May, 1455, fighting under the banner of that monarch, and was s. by his eldest surviving son, Henry Percy, 3rd earl.
