Memoir of the Late Deacon Lewis J. Clarke, Died 1888, Dec 9th. He was a son of John and Hannah Clarke and was born on March 14th 1809 at Northwood Place, Barnaby in Suffolk, England. His father was a farmer, and as he became matured
he was thoroughly trained in the practical art of real systematic farming and feeding of cattle for the London market, for which county of Suffolk, on account of the variety of soil and purity of water, is noted. In March, 1834, he and his brother John sailed from London to America, and after about nine weeks of sailing landed in New York. John remained in the States, and he came on to St.Catherines. There he became acquainted with the Faris, Philps, Brownlees and other leading families for whom he
ever cherish a grateful remembrance of their kindness to a stranger in a strange land. After three years he went back to England and brought his two sisters, Mary and Esther, to this country and finally located on the 9th concession of Malahide, in Elgin County near Aylmer, Ontario.
On the 9th of April, 1839, he was married to Deborah Ann, the second daughter of the late Deacon William Teeple, and shortly after located on lot 12, 9th concession of Malahide where he resided till he died on the 9th of Dec. The family consisted of ten children, six boys and four girls, seven of whom survive him. they are all married and in comfortable circumstances and all members of the Baptist Church.
Soon after the organization of the Township Council he was elected to the position of Deputy Reeve which he held for 11 years in succession. he was in the council when the County of Elgin was set off from Middlesex, was present when the $50,000 worth of stock was taken in the G. W. Railway, and was on the building committee when the Court House and Jail was built in St. Thomas. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1859 and again in 1863. During 1860 he with Joseph Nelson, Orlo Smith, Walter Brown and others, agitated the question of organizing an Agriculture Society which accomplished and he occupied the honourable position of president for many years. He was among the first to move for the Organization of the Northwood Cheese Company and was president for nine years and a salesman most of the time. The company has a good reputation and is doing a good business. In politics he took little part and always preferred to support what appeared to him to be correct principles, irrespective of party or men.
He was a member of the Malahide and Alymer Baptist Church for over forty years, having been deacon for thirty-eight years. The church will miss his cheerful countenance, his cordial greetings, his timely advice, his earnest prayers and his liberal support.
For some time he has been living retired from business, and was comfortable and happy, and felt desirous at one time of enjoying his home and family if it was the divine will of providence, but came down to his end rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, and anxious to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. He died in the bosom of his family, and was followed to his grave by a large assembly of mourners and friends. A very appropriate funeral service was held in the church by Pastor Sowerby assisted by Elders Mason and Marshall of the Baptist Church and Reverend Daunt of the English Church.
