EARLDOM of FIFE (SCT) (XIII, 2) 1420 to 1425

DUKEDOM OF ALBANY [SCT] (II) 1420

MURDOCH (STEWART), 2nd Duke Of Albany, Earl Of Fife and Earl Of Menteith, son and heir by 1st wife, born probably 1362. justiciar North of the Forth, 2 April 1389.  He was taken prisoner at the Scottish defeat on Homildon Hill, 14 September 1402, and was detained in England till 1415, when he was exchanged for the Earl of Northumberland.  He succeeded his father as REGENT [SCT] in 1420; and having accomplished the release of his cousin James I in 1424, attended him at his coronation at Scone.  The King, however "was not slow in commencing the work of vengence on the race by whom he had been long supplanted," and, having obtained their conviction, at a Parliament held at Perth 25 March 1425, caused the Duke himself, his two elder surviving sons (Walter and Alexander), and his father-in-law the Earl Of Lennox [SCT], to be beheaded on the Castle Hill of Stirling.

He m. 1stly Joan (?Douglas).  He m. 2ndly (settlement 17 February 1391/2), Isabel, suo jure COUNTESS OF LENNOX, 1st daughter and heir of line of Duncan, Earl Of Lennox [SCT], by Helen, daughter of Gillespic CAMPBELL.  She was heir presumptive to the Earldom of Lennox [SCT], her father having resigned it (to Robert II), and obtained a new grant thereof to himself and the heirs male of his body with remainder to her, her husband and the heirs of their bodies.  The Duke died when beheaded 24 May 1425, and was buried in the Blackfriars Church, Stirling, when, having been attainted, all his honours were forfeited.  His widow, suo jure COUNTESS OF LENNOX [SCT], died s.p.s., at Inchmurrin Castle, Loch Lomond, probably in 1458.
[Complete Peerage I:79, XIV:15, transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: The indication of Joan? Douglas as first wife was added as a correction by XIV:15, based on 'Scots Peerage', vol v, p. 342, note. According to Shawn Potter, soc.genealogy.medieval, they had a daughter Isabella who m. Walter Buchanan.

Note: Although CP doesn't indicate any surviving issue of Murdoch & Isabel, BP does say that a son James escaped the extinction/executions of the family in 1425 and ended up in Ireland, and he had issue.

Doune Castle is named for a dun, meaning fortified town, which stood nearby.  Doune was the Highland center for pistol making.  There are traces of prehistoric earthworks around this stone castle.  This iteration of the castle was built as a hunting lodge for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, who was the Regent of Scotland from 1396-1420.  Much of the castle has been restored in recent centuries, but it is still one of the least changed castles in Scotland.

Albany died in 1420, and his son, Murdoch, inherited the castle.  He didn't have it for long, though.  He was put to death by James I in 1425, and for more than a century, Doune Castle was held by the Crown.  It finally passed to the Morays.
