Joseph Jacob (Boekweg) Buckway, 77 of Shoshone, ID died Thursday of heart failure at St. Luke's Regional Medical center in Boise. He was born Dec. 21, 1925 in Ogden, Utah the son of Jacob and Anneke Opheikens Buckway.
He was raised in the Riverdale, Utah area and attended Weber County Schools. At 19 he entered the U. S. Army and served in the Infantry and Army Air Corp 46th Army Division. He served in Germany and France in WW II as part of the Army of Occupation and remained in Europe following the armistice, serving in a "displaced persons" camp as part of the rebuilding of Europe when the war was over. He married his lifelong companion, Patty Lee Lettman on March 13, 1948 in Ogden, Utah. He was a member of the Teamsters and Operating Engineer's Union and worked in road construction for many years. Pat and Joe operated a small farm in Weber County until they moved to North Shoshone in 1972 where he resided until his death. He loved the farm and the outdoors. He took great pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the American Angus Association and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patty of Shoshone; his son Henry Blake (JaNene) Buckway of Shoshone; two grandsons, Fredrick Blake (Emily) Buckway of Sweet, ID, Leland Edward (Joy) Buckway of Nampa, ID; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Ione Buckway of Twin Falls, ID and Jennefer Jean Buckway of Shoshone, ID; three great-grandchildren of Sweet, ID and Kale Edward Buckway of Nampa, ID. He is also survived by three brothers, George Buckway of Ogden, UT, Kenneth (Shirley) Buckway of Ogden, UT and John (Sherry) of Malta, ID; three sisters, Renske Shelton of Ogden, UT, Nellie Sammons of Knoxville, TN and his twin sister, Josephina Thomas of Ogden, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
A memorial service to honor Joe will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the Shoshone, ID LDS Church with Bishop Lamar Duffin presiding. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of White Mortuary "Chapel by the Park", Twin Falls, ID.
