He was a soldier in the Revolution, his record being given by the Pension Bureau at Washington as follows: "Asa CORBIN, aged 91 (?), residing Nassau. NY, applied for a pension Aug 9, 1832. He stated that he was born at Dudley, Mass., in May, 1741 (?), and there enlisted in the fall of 1775 under Capt. Nathaniel Healey, in Col. Ebenezer Learned's Mass. Regiment, and served two months as a private. In June 1776, he again enlisted under Capt. Nichols, Col. Jonathan Holman's regiment, and served five months, participating in the Battle of White Plains. Afterwards (date not stated) he served four and a half months under Capt. Healey and Col. Learned. His claim was allowed at $33.33 per annum, commencing March 4, 1831." Timothy and Joshua CORBIN made affidavits that they served with him in 1776 and were in the battle of White Plains.
Asa CORBIN gave a deed Feb 17, 1794, in Worcester County, Mass. Family tradition says that he went to White Plains, Westchester County, N.Y., where he engaged in business as a tanner. But, as shown above, he resided at Nassau, Rensselaer County, N.Y., in 1832. No descendants are known."

"I believe I and and a host of others are descendants of Asa CORBIN, born in 1846 at Dudley. I suggest that Ephraim in the 1810 and 1820 census' for Nassau, NY, was Asa's son, and the father of Moses, later of Grafton. Debra CORBIN, Wife of Philander, who was a son of Moses, records in her Bible, which I have seen, that Philander was born in Nassau in 1827. Records at the National Archives reveal that in 1831/2 Asa was aged and infirm and was cared for at Troy, NY. Asa had 10 siblings; the most prominent were Ephraim, Moses, Timothy and Elkanah, because of their Rev. War service. Where Asa was from the time he left MA with his brother Moses until he appeared in Rensselaer Cty, NY, is a mystery. Regards, Sherm."

We have no concrete information about Asa, Patience or any of their children. We believe that they had a son Ephraim, but have no proof. Most of our information is summed up in Msg #931 in this forum. We would appreciate any info you have on Asa & Patience, and how you made the link from your Sarah back to them.

Joan:
Listed in "Worcester County Massachusetts Warnings 1737-1788" are two Charleton families which received warnings 29 March 1785. One was "Asa CORBIN, w. Patience, ch. Smith, Ephraim, Sarah, Polly."
Below are URLs for pertinent page as well as home page of the dealer which put this book on line -- with links to intro and all towns included (have not yet checked other towns for Corbins).

My cousin, Lt. Col. Barbara Nichols, first found this book in a Hartford, CT, library. Just last night I discovered it was on-line and thought other Asa & Patience researchers would be interested.
Barb and I are 3rd great-granddaughters of Asa's daughter, Sarah (CORBIN) Nichols.

Joan: One of your earlier postings (#1231) has Asa CORBIN marrying twice -- his second bride being a gal named Ellenor (m. abt 1770). According to the "Worcester Warnings" list, in 1785 Asa's wife was named Patience (and they had a child named Smith). Isn't it more probable that Patience (Smith) CORBIN was still among the living, and this Ellenor was married to somebody else (perhaps a different Asa CORBIN)?
Also, do you have many/any Smith Corbins in your records? There seems to be a lot of speculation about the names of Asa and Patience's children, but the warnings list is the first thing I've seen even hinting there was a son by that name
While I don't have a tree on-line (anywhere, yet), I may have sent part of it to you during a brief correspondence some months ago (am already on your list).

I looked up my Smith/Corbins and this is what I have:A. Smith to Betsey CORBIN. Glenn E. Smith to Anna Berniece CORBIN. There may be more, but I have so many Smith's I didn't go through them all. In the Ancestry World Tree F2450 I found the name Elleanor as his wife. I am not sure of this however. I would like to have your parents names so I can trace you down from ASA. I will try to find out about this Elleanor. do you have Patience Smith's parents names and dates?

Sorry if my question somehow confused you, Joan. I'm not looking for Smiths who married Corbins, but for Smith Corbins -- Corbins whose given name is Smith. I am curious what may have happened to Asa and Patience's son, Smith CORBIN, and if he is the only one of that name. I have only one other person in my database whose given name is Smith. And that is Smith Nichols, a grandson of John and Sarah (CORBIN) Nichols.

First let me add the following census listings to the summary in the message you cited (#931). Although there still isn't any trace of Asa CORBIN in Rensselaer Co., NY, is it possible that all three of those present -- Ephraim, Asa and Moses -- are his sons (is it definitely known they belong to someone else)?

Has anyone ever encounter a Smith CORBIN, who might possibly be the son of Asa CORBIN and Patience Smith? Smith's listing as one of their children in 1785 Worcester Co., MA, Warnings (below) is the only mention I've been able to find of him.
1785 Mch. 29: CORBIN, Asa , w. Patience, ch. Smith, Ephraim, Sarah, Polly.
