1703 Mentioned in the will of his father Edward Sheppard, and was made a beneficiary of his mother Susan's portion, after his mother's decease. 1726 Mentioned in his wife's will "....dishes Item I give and bequeath unto my dear & well beloved husband John Shepherd the sum of twenty shillings of lawfull money of Great Britain to be paid to him or his Assigns by my Executors hereafter named yearly and every year for the term of his natural life...." 1727 Mentioned in 'A Copy of the Poll for Knights of the Shire' Taken at the Town of Hertford, Sept. 7, 1727 - Richard Warren Esq., High Sheriff. 1734 Mentioned in 'A Copy of the Poll for Knights of the Shire' for the County of Hertford, Taken at the Town of Hertford, May 2 1734, Roger Tuack Esq, High Sheriff. 1734 LAST WILL & TESTAMENT John Shepherd The Last Will and Testament of John Shepherd of Pirton in the county of Hertford Taylor. In the first place I give and devise unto William Shepherd my nephew of Pirton aforesaid all that half acre of arable land with the appurtenances situate lying and being in the parish and fields of Pirton aforsaid in a shott called or known by the name of Long Boell there and also all that half acre by estimation of arrable land lying in the fields of Pirton aforsaid in Duckriddy Shott there and also all that half acre more of arrable land lying in the fields of Pirton aforsaid in low furlong shotts there and also all that close of arrable land and pasture ground lying and being in Northend corner in Pirton aforsaid and containing two acres more or less which said lands and premises and holden of the manor of Pirton Dodding[sells] by Coppy of Court Roll to hold the said arrable land close and premises with the appurtenances unto the said William Shepherd and to his heirs and assigns forever I also give and devise unto Richard Shepherd my nephew of Pirton aforsaid all that cottage or tenement with the appurtenances situate standing and being in Pirton aforsaid in the occupation of John Day together - with all out houses edifices buildings yards gardens and hedges ditches trees fences commons ways waters easements proffits commodities and appurtenances to the said cottage or tenement belonging or appertaining to hold the said cottage or tenement and premises with the appurtenances unto the said Richard Shepherd and to his heirs and assignes forever I also give and devise more unto the said Richard Shepherd all that close or pightle of arrable land and pasture ground with the appurtenances lying in Pirton aforsaid and containing by estemation three roods and also all that pole of meadow and pasture ground lying in a leet or known by the name of the Polewood Leet in the loft meadows in Pirton aforsaid the said Close or pightle and pole of meadow ground being heretofore the lands of Mary Horn and holden of the manor of Pirton in the county of Hertford aforesaid by Coppy of Court Roll to hold the said Close or pightle and pole of meadow ground with the appurtenances unto the said Richard Shepherd and of his Heirs and assignes forever. The rest or residue of my Custumary or Coppyhold lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever lying and being in the Parish and fields of Pirton aforesaid and within the several manors of Pirton aforesaid and Pirton Rectory in the said County of Hertford with every of their rights members appendants and appurtenances give and devise unto my nephew Edward Shepherd of Pirton aforesaid to hold the same premises unto the said Edward Shepherd and to his Heire and assignes for ever of all which Coppyhold premisses above mentioned I have made surrenders to the use of this my will I give and bequeath unto Sarah the wife of William Honour of Watershires in the Parish of Shillington in the county of Bedford the summ of twenty pounds of lawfull money of Great Britaine to be paid to her by my Executors here after named within six months next after the desease of my sister Hannah Shepherd her mother and my will touching the Legacy given to the said Sarah Honour further is that in case she the said Sarah shall depart this life the sum of Twenty pounds is made payable unto her as aforsaid that the same shall be paid unto the Heirs of the aforsaid Sarah at his or her age of Twenty one years I also give and bequeath unto Ann(?) the daughter of the said Sarah Honour the sum of five pounds of the lawfull money to be paid to her by my Executors herafter named at her age of twenty one years I give and bequeath unto Susannah the wife of James Crouch of Shillington afforsaid the summ of twenty pounds of like Money to be paid to her by my Executors herafter named within six moneths next after the decease of the said Hannah Shepherd her Mother and if she the said Susannah shall depart this life before her said legacy is due to be paid as aforsaid that then I will that the said summ of Twenty pounds be paid to the Heirs of the said Susannah at his or her age of Twenty one years I also give and bequeath unto the son of the above named James Crouch the sum of five pounds of like money to be paid to him by my Executors herafter named at his age of Twenty one years I give and bequeath unto my neice Hannah Shepherd the sum of Twenty pounds of like lawfull money to be paid to her by my Executors herafter named within twelve months next after my decease I give and bequeath unto Ann the daughter of my nephew Johne Shepherd the sum of five pounds of like lawfull money to be paid to her by my Executors herafter named at her age of Twenty one years and I do hereby charge the several lands and tenements given to my nephews…(crease of the page - illegible)….and by this my will with the payment of the several legacies in this my will set forth All the rest and residue of my personall estate goods chattels and creditts whatsoever my debts and funeral expenses being ther….. first paid and discharged I give and bequeath …….the said William Shepherd and Edward whome I do hereby nominate and appoynt ……..Executors of this my will and I do revoke disannul and make void all former wills by me made this my will being contained in two sheets of paper I have to each of them sett my hand and seal this seventeenth day October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty four Published and declared to be the Testament of the said John John Shepherd
