BARLEY END (Berle, xiii cent.) is first mentioned in 1291, when the gift of the Earl of Cornwall's land in this 'hamlet' to Ashridge College was confirmed. In 1531 John Duncombe described himself in his will as 'of Barley Ende.' An account of the parish in the early part of the 18th century says that Barley End House was the seat of William Duncombe, whose family had held it for generations.
William Duncombe died 26 October 1576. Buried at Ivinghoe. Son of Thomas Duncombe of Barleyend. Ivinghoe d1531 and his wife, Joan. William married Mary Reynes daughter of Richard Reynes. Children listed John died 1594 aged 90, Thomas, Roger, Edward buried at Ivinghoe 1566 and Elizabeth married William Draynes. No other wife mentioned.
