FAMILIES and COATS OF ARMS connected with CHURSTON
The Manor of Churston was held by sub-tenants of the Lords of Totnes and they controlled their own chapel until it was given to the villagers in 1480, to be under the care of me Vicar ofSt Mary's, Brixham. The BOZUN family lived at Churston in the 13th Century and their shield is 'Azure, three bird bolts in fess Or'. In 1303 their co-heiress, Alice, married Hugo de Ferrers of Bere Ferrers, a warrior knight of Edward I. The FERRERS occupancy lasted the 14th Century and left their surname attached to the village name. Their coat of arms is 'Argent, on a bend Sable, three horseshoes Or'. Joan, co-heiress other fattier, William Ferrers, and other mother, Elizabeth Matesford, married Richard Yarde of Bradley Manor in 1405. The YARDE coat of arms is 'Argent, a chevron Gules between three water-bougets Sable' and in me next century they married into me Wadham, Halse, and Bampfield families, the shields of all these being visible in the church.
