' Richard Brent, Esq., Sheriff of Gloucestershire was born circa 1573 at of Admington, Gloucestershire, England.1 He married Elizabeth Reade, daughter of Giles Reade, Esq., Sheriff of Gloucestershire & Worcestershire and Katherine Greville, in 1594; They had 6 sons (Fulk; Richard; Col. Giles, Esq;William; Edward; & George) & 7 daughters (Margaret; Mary; Catherine, a nun; Elizabeth, a nun; Eleanor, a nun; Jane; & Anne).1 Richard Brent, Esq., Sheriff of Gloucestershire was buried on 1 May 1652 at St. Mary's, Ilmington, Gloucestershire, England.1 His estate was probated on 21 May 1652.1

Their son William Brent Lord of Stoke and Admington dyed 1595 with Elizabeth his wife here buried. Their son Richard Brent married Mary daughter of John Huggeford and Katherine Hennage his wife, 1572 and died 1587. Here buried. Their son 'Richard Brent married Elizabeth daughter of Giles Reed Esquire & Katherine Grevill his wife Anno 1594 and dyed 1652. He was here buried but his wife at Bredon with her father'. Their son Richard Brent married Margaret daughter of Sir john Peshall Baronet and Anne Sheldon his wife Ano 1622. Four of whose children (viz) Frances, Mary, Elizabeth, and Giles lye here buried Anno 1657. The sd. Margaret Brent died June 20th, 1666. Here buried.

The name of Odo de Brent's son is not known, but that of his grandson Jeffry, whose son, Nicholas, was the father of Sir Robert, who died in 1262 (46 Henry III.), having married Millicent ___. (She married second, Raymond Malet.5) Their son, Sir Robert, married Isabella, the daughter of Simon de Montecute; she survived him, his death occurring in the second year of Edward II. When Edward I. went into Gascony, 1277, Sir Robert attended him, as he did in most of his expeditions into Scotland, being then a Knight. In 1297 he was Knight of the Shire of Som-

erset, at the Parliament then held at Westminster. he is said to have been the first to use a seal of his arms, viz., a Wiven, as it is now borne and has generally been used by his descendants.6
His son, also Sir Robert de Brent, married Claricia, the daughter and heir of Sir Adam de la Ford, of Ford, in the Parish of Bawdrip, by whom he had the Manor of Ford, and other lands, in this County, Wilts, Hants and Essex. Sir Robert is buried on the north side of the shoir of the Abbey Church of Glastonbury. This Robert was also a knight and a great benefactor to the Abbey of Glastonbury.
His son, Sir Robert de Brent, married Elizabeth Deneband, and died 1357 (25 Edw. III.). One of their sons, also Sir Robert, succeeded his father at Cossington. Another son, John, settled himself at Charing, in Kent, on some lans which were Sir Adam de la Ford's, and became the progenitor of a family which continued there with great dignity for many generations.8
Their son, Sir John Brent, married Joan, the daughter and heir of John le Eyre, of Midlezoy, by whom he

had a manor in that parish. The arms of Le Eyre were: Ar, on a chevron, sable, three quatre foyles oF.9
Their son, Sir John Brent of Cossington, married, first Ida, the daughter of Sir John Beauchamp, of Lilisdon, Knt., by whom he had Sir Robert, who succeeded him in the estates of Cossington; and, second Joan, the daughter of Sir Robert Latimer, Knt.
A son of the second married, Sir John, succeeded to the estate of Cossington (upon the death and exinction of the line of his half-brother, Sir Robert Brent).10
His son, Sir Robert, married Margaret, the daughter of Hugh Malet, of Currypool.
Their younger son, Robert married Margery, the daughter of George Colchester, Lord of Stoke and Admington, and died 1531. This Robert Brent founded the Brent family of Stoke and Admington, whose place of burial was in the church at Ilmington, in Warwickshire, where a memorial tablet in brass gives an account of their marriages and deaths.
A son, Sir William Brent, Lord of Stoke and Admington, married Elizabeth ___, and died 1595. Their son, Sir Robert, married, 1572, Mary, the daughter of John and Katharine (Hennage) Huggeford, and died 1587. The will of Mary Brent, widow,11 bequeathed silver to her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Elinor, Anne, Jane, Richard, Gyles, William, Edward, and George Brent.

' The elder son, Sir Richard, married, 1594, Elizabeth, the daughter of Giles Reed, Esq., Lord of Tusburie and Witten, and Katherine Greville, his wife. Sir Richard died 1652, and was buried at Ilmington. He had thirteen children, a number of whom were conspicuously connnect with the early history of Maryland and Virginia, viz.: Foulke, Giles, Mary, and Margaret.
Their sixth child, George, was granted administration on his father's estate, May 21, 1652. He is mentioned in his grandmother's will and in a conveyance of 1663, as of "Defford." he married Marianna, the daughter of Sir John Peyton, of Doddington; she was twice married after George Brent's death, and died after 1663. Their son GEORGE, was the colonist, who went to Virginia.

Giles Brent, Capt. George Brent and Robert Brent, Gent. [1946], and The Descendants of Hugh Brent [1936]. The former is supplemented by Dr. George Mason Graham Stafford in his work, General George Mason Graham [1947]." Mr. King goes on to note "It is and error in The Descendants of Hugh Brent, page 59, where it is stated that Anne Brent (1737-1802) married Hugh Atwell. She married on November 14, 1762 Thomas Atwell, Gentleman, (1737-1788) of Prince William County, Virginia and both of their last wills and Testaments remain of record in Prince William County.

This Richard was left a ward of Edward (aka Giles) Reed, Lord of Tusburie & Witten, at the death of his grandfather (he father pre-deceased) and then married the eldest daughter of Reed. Callls her Eleanor Reed.
I think both Brent families are related several generations back in England-just have not proven it-though the given name Hugh runs through the Catholic line. It could be that the Hugh Brent of Stafford was from a branch that converted to the Anglican church before immigrating and therefore was long estranged from the Catholic branch.

The place is today just on the Warwickshire side of the boundary with Gloucestershire, though apparently both Admington and Lark Stoke were part of Gloucestershire when this person lived.

Richard Brent was Sheriff of Gloucestershire, 1614, and a subscriber to the building of a bridge at Stratford upon Avon in 1618.
Issue of Richard and Elizabeth (Reed) Brent:
1. Fulke, emigrated to Maryland 1638, married Cecelia, and died without issue in 1656;
2. Richard, baptized Nov. 7, 1656 (apparently as an adult), married Margaret, daughter of Sir John Peshall, mentioned in grandmother's will, dated 22 July 1676. Codicil 27 Oct. 1678, will proved to May 1679, his wife Margaret buried at Ilmington 22 June 1666.
3. Giles, emigrated to Maryland 1638, married Mary, died in Virginia 1671;
4. William, married Barbara and died without issue, his wife buried at Ilmington, 10 July 1686. Concerning this gentleman, Anthony a Wood says: "Henry Carey began a translation of the history of France written by Count Gualdo Priorato, but died after he made some progress therein. Afterwards it was finished by Wm. Brent Esq'r, and printed at London 1677 (being the same person that had before wrote (sic) a book entitled "A discourse upon the nature of eternity and the condition of a separated soul according to the grounds of reason and principles of Christian Religion," London 1655, written while he was a prisoner in the Gatehouse at Westminster. It was afterwards printed there again in 1674). By the way, it must be known that though we have several Brents who have been students of the university (Oxford), yet this William Brent was not, but educated when a youth in Coll. of English Jesuits at St. Omers. Afterwards being entered into the Society of Grey's Inn, he became a barrister and a solicitor or such like officer under Thomas Earl of Stafford, when he was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was born at Lark Stoke in Gloucestershire, in the Parish of Ilmington in Warwickshire, and having suffered much for his religion by imprisonment, payments of money, and I know not what, lived privately several years at Foxcote in Warwickshire, and in his last days in London. He died near Little Turnstile, in Holborn in the Parish of St. Giles in the Fields, near London, 21 May 1691, aged 80 years or more."

Marcus was born in circa 1602 in Hamburg, Germany. His father was David (or Daniel) Brandt and mother was Citsea (or Clitsea) nee' Rockbear. I also have found that Marcus Brandt married Elizabeth nee' Crewe on 5 Mar 1638 (or 1639) at Saint Andrew By The Wardrobe Church, London, England. Marcus Brandt's name appears as Marke Bran in their record of marriage, but that may have been the recording error made by a hard-of-hearing cleric who performed the marriage ceremony. Elizabeth Crewe was reportedly born circa 1619 in Kent, England. The IGI contains a record that Marcus Brandt had passed away on 2 Oct 1671, presumably on Barbados. Marcus Brandt and his newly married spouse Elizabeth must have emigrated to Barbados immediately after their marriage in 1638/39 as the International Genealogical Index (IGI) database shows they gave birth to a son Randolph Brandt in St. Michael Parish, Barbados, in circa 1640. I searched the sailing ships' passenger lists for a Marcus and Elizabeth Brandt having sailed from England to Barbados in the 1638-1640 time period but did not find their names (Marcus and Elizabeth Brand/Brandt/Brant) on any ship passenger list. I did find that in 1656, a ship had carried an indentured servant (Bridget Pendry of Llangover, Monmouth) to William Brand, who was established as one of the earliest landowners/planters on Barbados, but I do not know if there is any relationship of this William Brand (possibly a paternal uncle) to the Brandt surname. The Barbados Archives has a record (St. Michael Parish Register RL1/1, page 97, 1665) of an Eliza(beth). Brant (spelled with no "d") being baptised (christened) on 19 Oct 1665 in St. Michael, Barbados, and that her father was Randolph Brant. A separate record shows that this younger Elizabeth Bran(d)t was the daughter of Randolph and Mary (nee' Unknown) Brandt. Randolph Brandt (son of Marcus and Elizabeth Brandt) is shown in the IGI database to have passed away in Feb 1698 in Charles City, Maryland. There is also a record on file at the Barbados Archives in Bridgetown, St. Michael (St. Michael Parish Register RL1/1, page 240, 1679) that a Mrs. Elizabeth Brandt was married on 12 Feb 1679 to Mr. Martin Dallison in St. Michael Parish. This Elizabeth Brandt was most likely the daughter of Randolph and Mary (nee' Unknown) Brandt, but would require that she have been at least 4-8 years old at her baptism in 1665 to be old enough to marry in 1679. The IGI database shows that this Elizabeth Brandt died in Mar 1694. A not likely (due to her age being about 60 years), but very possible fact of genealogical record, is that the Mrs. Elizabeth Brandt married in 1679 to Martin Dallison was the widow of Marcus Brandt (8 years after his death in 1671) and was the same Elizabeth nee' Crewe Brandt described earlier.
I would suspect Marcus and Conrad were in business together on the island of Barbados in the Caribbean during the early to mid 1600s, but the connection could be a family connection as well. I know Marcus was a German shipper/merchant, and I think Conrad is of German descent as well, and looking to prove it. I can provide information on some of the other families if anyone has an interest.
